We finally get a Vikings player.  He started 14 games last season at left guard, missing two with a knee injury.  The 6’6”, 315-pounder was originally the Redskins 6th round pick in 2012 and he spent four years in Washington before spending a season with the Falcons, Bears and Vikings from 2016-18.  In addition to left guard, he has played right guard and right tackle.

COMPTON-WIDE

The Jets have signed offensive lineman Tom Compton.

A seventh-year veteran, Compton started 14 games at left guard for the Vikings last season. The 6’6”, 315-pounder was originally the Redskins sixth-round pick in 2012 (No. 193 overall) and he spent four years in Washington before spending one season with the Falcons, Bears and Vikings from 2016-18. Compton has played in 85 games over his career (29 starts) and in addition to left guard, he’s lined up at right guard and right tackle.

The South Dakota prospect was a three-time Great West Conference selection and became the first Coyote to be drafted since 1986.

This is the move I've been waiting for.

Hahaha.

Hey. Depth is depth. It’s a good signing right now.
I look forward to the draft and the after draft cuts. Many teams will cut the Allen fanecas of the world once high draft choices like Vladimir Ducasse are snatched up.

OVERVIEW

Compton has started four straight seasons at tackle for South Dakota, and possesses NFL-caliber size for the position while possessing good athleticism as well. He is somewhat of an unknown coming from a smaller school, but he has shown the efficiency, smarts, and athletic ability to survive at the next level. He could be selected as high as the fourth round.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Compton is quick off the ball and can use angles to effectively get upfield on linebackers. He can position and does a good job of not letting his man get behind him. He can get around the line to the second level effortlessly when pulling, and has a technically sound pass set which displays his perfect footwork.

WEAKNESSES

Compton has limited experience against top-level competition (though he has faced Minnesota and Wisconsin in recent seasons) and could have a learning phase early on. He is a good run blocker but is far from explosive; more of a gentle mover and sustainer than a dominating force. As a pass blocker he punches his hands but can get slightly off balance at times.

Good depth and experience, especially on the right side. He graded out as average last season so that's not bad at all for a backup. Winters will need to earn that $6.5M starting spot this year or he could end up the chopping block.

I think the only way he starts is if Shell isn’t ready to go by the start of the season or Winters gets injured.

Well then we can count on him starting a lot of games! Does this mean we are not signing Wisniewski?

What went wrong?
  • The interior offensive line. Starting guards Mike Remmers and Tom Compton combined to allow a staggering 77 total pressures. Remmers finished with an overall grade of 58.9 (50th among guards), and Compton was only slightly higher at 60.2 (47th).

Interestingly Remmers was in discussion with the Giants for a long time.
