Game Observations (BUF)

Here's the observation, an absolutely pathetic, putrid and trash
performance by everyone in a Jet uniform.  After choosing not to
come out for the National Anthem (don't get me started) they
should've stayed in there for the rest of the game.  A totally
fake final score of 27-17 hides the total no show effort:

Special Teams

- The first play of the game should've been a sign, Josh Malone
returns the KO outside the 30.  Decent field position, but of
course there's a holding penalty.  So they start at the 9, typical.
Credit to Malone because that was the only semblance of a return
all game.  I know Ashtyn Davis was a hurdler in college but that
needs to be left on the track.  He got his bell rung because he
stupidly tried to hurdle a tackler

- Unfortunately we saw way too much of Braden Mann.  Good job by
him (46.3 avg) but no one wants to see a punter that much

- Sam Ficken was perfect in all his attempts (FG, 2 XP's) but so
what

Defense

- Poor job by the defense in containing Josh Allen's running game
in the first half

- As usual no front seven pressure which allowed Allen way too much
time in the pocket

- Is Blake Cashman's body allergic to artificial turf?  He gets one
snap into the season and he's hurt again?  He now has become the 
"Caucasian Dee Milliner", you have a shot to solidify a starting
job and you can't stay on the field.  Give me a break 

- An excellent Trumaine Johnson impersonation by Pierre Desir and
that's not a good thing.  So poor of a performance that Gregg
Williams pulls him for Nate Hairston

- Marcus Maye filled the hybrid role as expected and had a good
game: 10 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 2 TFL, 2 Passes Defensed and 2 QB Hits

- Bless Austin earned a starting job and then backed it up with:
8 Tackles and 1 TFL

- Brian Poole had a costly holding penalty in the red zone which
cost the team a TD.  But he was productive with: 9 Tackles, 1 Sack,
1 TFL and 1 Pass Defensed

Offense

- What offense?  A total nonsensical plan to start the game.  The
only groups that were able to stay on the field during camp was
the OLine, TE's, RB's and Darnold.  Why not test the conditioning
of BUF defense and run the ball?  Nope, let's spread out and have
BUF test our pass protection with blitzes.  How did that work?
They didn't get a first down until two minutes left in the first
quarter

- Jamison Crowder was the only offensive player who put up decent
numbers (7 rec, 115 yds, TD) and he even had a couple of drops

- Chris Herndon was a non-factor (6 rec, 37 yds) with a costly
fumble.  And NOT ONE target for Ryan Griffin?  Can someone explain
this to me?

- Breshad Perriman also was a non-factor (3 recs, 17 yds)   

- Sam Darnold was horrible I don't care what his stats were (21/35,
215 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT).  You are now three years in the league, you
can't have a delay of game penalty on the first play of a drive with
NO CROWD NOISE.  Also, you can't take a sack by running out of bounds
when you can throw it away.  And finally you can not throw that INT
when you have an easy run in front of you that can pick up the first
down.  Totally inaccurate in the first half and definitely the far
inferior QB.  I am now officially concerned about what Darnold is
and what he'll become

Darnold is in year 3. No more personnel excuses for him.  He had WR's open today all over the field in the 1st half and he was missing them by 5 yards. Totally unacceptable for an alleged franchise QB. If he doesn't improve drastically I don't see how the Jets win more than 3 games and that's being generous.

Without a legitimate pass rush any QB in the NFL will destroy the NY Jets secondary.

Players I was pleasantly surprised by. 

Bless Austin, Becton, Langi, Gore.

Disappointed by:

Darnold, Bell, Perriman, Herndon, Q, Jenkins, Desir.... The list could probably go on for a very long time.

I’d have to watch tape, but my suspicion is that Perriman wasn’t as bad as his stat line indicates.  I saw him open a number of times.

I did see Quinnen Williams with an assisted tackle - so we have that going for us!

Maye had by far the best game of his career and a bottom half offense with quite literally one of the worst quarterbacks in the league still hung 27 which might as well have been 33 with 300+ coming through the air. This season is ****ed and the defense especially. Jets are officially one of the favorites for the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes. Trading Adams might be something that eventually had to happen due to the situation deteriorating to the point that it did, but today was fairly clear with respect to how much that guy impacted a game. Respect to Maye playing his balls off but he's not Adams.  

Also Quinnen Williams, sweet lord baby Jesus talk about an all-time bust.

trading away a top 30 player for draft picks while the other guys in his class are getting PAID sent a loud and clear message that winning isn’t the goal this year and this team doesn’t take care of their own

Nonsensical statement about Adams. Poole pretty much played exactly like Adams in the same rol.

Agree about Q, I would try and get anything I could for him we might still be able to get a higher pick because people will assume he is help back by us. Would be addition by subtraction

I didn't see that, I watched a better Buffalo team at home kick our ass all over the field. I also saw what a real head coach looks like.

Couple of my observations:

1. Bell needs to just sit. I think him being out and injured could be good. I think that the offense even going back to last year is just less effective with him as RB. He's too slow, and just does not fit the scheme at all. Hopefully Perrine is good to go for next week, was supposed to be a not serious low ankle sprain, I think he will lift the offense.

2. Watching NO today solidified a thought I have had about Sam for a while now. Sam seems to sort of play like his first few passes. If he has success he gets better as the game goes on. But if he doesn't he struggles. I think that Payton consistently gives Brees a few sort of gimme passes at the beginning to get him into rhythm. The Jets really need to script this for Sam.

3. Yes we were putrid, but Buffalo seemed to get a little of convenient calls as well which fueled the bad momentum

4. By my eye the OL shows promise but still a long way to go. They were poor at picking up stunts in the middle and Becton needs to be stouter against power. He was not good but hard to expect him to be without any live action in the preseason. Fant seemed pretty solid, will be interesting to see where he rates.

5. Bless was excellent.

6. Q should be traded tomorrow. Take the cap hit, and get what you can. I think the Jets might still get two picks including a 2nd for him. I will say it now: he sucks and just is a complete slug from an effort standpoint.

7. It is week 1, easy to overreact remember we looked incompetent a couple times in 2010 too.

Maye still left some plays out there. He just seems scared of being The Man, he was given so many opportunities, did nice on the FF, He was a free runner most of the time, should never miss those. 
 

no excuses.  QW is a JAG. Blake Cashman is glass. Brand new OL, WR’s, no preseason games - I don’t fkn care. This team sucks and the worst part is Sam had zero poise back there. The OL was actually better than last year already but Sam rushes everything and was off all day.  He’s got 15 games to prove he can be a FQB otherwise this team moves on.
