Not only are they the ones usually making the bulk of the tackles, the really good linebackers also find ways to contribute both in pass coverage and as a pass rusher. Consider that besides accounting for the top 11 tacklers in 2017, four different linebackers finished with double-digit sacks and there were several among the league leaders in forced fumbles. So whether they line up inside or wreak havoc from the outside, here are Athlon Sports' linebacker rankings entering the 2018 season. Athlon's player rankings are just one of the features that appear in the 2018 NFL Preview magazine. 2018 NFL Inside Linebacker Rankings 1. Luke Kuechly, Carolina Wasted no time re-establishing himself as the NFL's top MLB after missing the final six games of 2016 with a concussion. Penchant for doing things the right way also led to his being named the NFL's 2017 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award winner. 2. Bobby Wagner, Seattle Would surpass Eugene Robinson (942) as Seahawks' all-time leading tackler in 2019 at his current pace. Just one tackle away from passing Joe Nash (779) for third place on Seattle's list. 3. C.J. Mosley, Baltimore Hit the ground running as a rookie in 2014 and hasn't slowed down since. His 474 tackles rank fifth among all NFL players over the past four seasons. 4. Eric Kendricks, Minnesota The Vikings' leading tackler for three straight seasons, the past two of which saw Minnesota finish in the top three defensively in yards allowed. Versatile enough in pass defense to cover or blitz as evidenced by his career-high 13 QB hits in 2017. 5. Deion Jones, Atlanta A huge reason the Falcons finished with top-10 rankings in total and scoring defense for the first time since their 1998 Super Bowl season. Led the Falcons in tackles (138) and interceptions (three). 6. Dont'a Hightower, New England After he played in only five games last season because of a shoulder injury, Hightower's return is anxiously awaited by a defense that allowed an un-Patriot-like 366 yards per game in 2017. Versatile enough to excel at both inside and outside linebacker spots. 7. Benardrick McKinney, Houston Now unquestionably the franchise's top inside linebacker following Brian Cushing's offseason release. Led the 2017 Texans with 95 tackles, including seven that went for a loss. 8. Blake Martinez, Green Bay Martinez became the first Packers player with 150-plus tackles (158, to be exact) since A.J. Hawk in 2013. Likely to replace the departed Morgan Burnett (Pittsburgh) as Green Bay's defensive signal caller, which shows how much he's already valued by new Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. 9. Zach Brown, Washington Unhappy with what was being offered in last year's free-agent market, Brown signed a one-year deal with the Redskins intent on raising his value for the 2018 offseason. He did just that, earning a three-year, $24 million extension following a 127-tackle showing. 10. Alec Ogletree, New York Giants Combination of other personnel priorities and his being a less-than-ideal system fit in the Rams' 3-4 defense led to Ogletree's offseason trade to New York despite having signed a four-year, $42.8 million extension just five months earlier. Becomes the linebacker force the Giants have sorely lacked since Antonio Pierce's heyday a decade earlier. 11. Anthony Hitchens, Kansas City 12. Preston Brown, Cincinnati 13. Darron Lee, New York Jets 14. Wesley Woodyard, Tennessee 15. Demario Davis, New Orleans 16. Avery Williamson, New York Jets 17. Jarrad Davis, Detroit 18. Vince Williams, Pittsburgh 19. Kwon Alexander, Tampa Bay 20. Joe Schobert, Cleveland 2018 3-4 Outside Linebacker Rankings 1. Von Miller, Denver The NFL's sack leader since 2014 with 48.5. Ranks second in NFL history in sacks per game (0.80) among players who have appeared in 100 or more contests, trailing only Reggie White (0.85). 2. Jadeveon Clowney, Houston The first AFC player since 2015 with 20-plus tackles for a loss and 20-plus QB hits in the same season. Played in all 16 games for the first time since being the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 draft. 3. Ryan Kerrigan, Washington Kerrigan's 47 sacks rank second among all defensive players since 2014. One of only eight players to have started every game since entering the NFL in 2011. 4. Terrell Suggs, Baltimore The Ravens team MVP continued to flourish even after turning 35 last October. Ranks second among active sack leaders with 125.5. 5. Brian Orakpo, Tennessee The first Titans player since Jevon Kearse (1999-2001) to record at least seven sacks in three consecutive seasons. Also credited with a career-best 73 QB pressures in 2017. 6. Clay Matthews, Green Bay Continued to sacrifice heavy pass-rushing role for multi-faceted use in Dom Capers' defensive scheme. That situation may change with Mike Pettine becoming Green Bay's new D-coordinator. 7. Justin Houston, Kansas City Injuries and lack of supporting cast have kept Houston from approaching the 22-sack season he enjoyed in 2014. He'll need to prove worthy of a scheduled $15.3 million salary in 2019. 8. Preston Smith, Washington Career highs in tackles (42) and interceptions (two) combined with eight sacks reflect development toward becoming a premier OLB. 9. T.J. Watt, Pittsburgh It's easy to find No. 90 on the field because of how much energy he brought, not to mention the seven sacks that tied for second best among all rookies. Set to start assuming a bigger leadership role. 10. Whitney Mercilus, Houston After mustering 19.5 combined sacks the previous two years, a torn pectoral muscle ended his 2017 season in Week 5. Described by teammate J.J. Watt as "one of the most underrated players in the league" for his combination of run-stuffing prowess and pass-rushing ability. 11. Matt Judon, Baltimore 12. Leonard Floyd, Chicago 13. Bud Dupree, Pittsburgh 14. Derrick Morgan, Tennessee 15. Nick Perry, Green Bay 16. Dee Ford, Kansas City 17. Shaq Barrett, Denver 18. Jordan Jenkins, New York Jets 19. Shane Ray, Denver 20. Connor Barwin, Free Agent 2018 4-3 Outside Linebacker Rankings 1. Sean Lee, Dallas The Cowboys' defense can't function effectively without him in the lineup. Still struggles with injuries, having never completed a 16-game season during eight years in the NFL. 2. Anthony Barr, Minnesota Rebounded after a subpar 2016 campaign. Also earned a permanent historical spot in the Vikings-Packers feud by breaking Aaron Rodgers' collarbone. 3. Lavonte David, Tampa Bay One of only two players -- along with Thomas Davis -- with at least 15 sacks and 10 interceptions over the past six seasons. Knack for big plays reflected by his franchise-record five fumble recoveries in 2017. 4. Telvin Smith, Jacksonville Carolina's Luke Kuechly and Baltimore's C.J. Mosley are the only other players with 400-plus tackles, five interceptions and at least four forced and recovered fumbles since 2014. Had 14 tackles and a 50-yard fumble return for a touchdown in a playoff upset of Pittsburgh. 5. K.J. Wright, Seattle A model of consistency with four straight seasons of 100-plus tackles. Excellent range for someone so big at 6'4" and 246 pounds. 6. Thomas Davis, Carolina The first NFL player ever to overcome three torn ACLs in the same knee will be calling it a career on his own terms after the 2018 season. No Panthers player has ever appeared in more postseason games (11). 7. Nigel Bradham, Philadelphia Flourished after moving full time to middle linebacker and assuming the play-calling responsibilities once Jordan Hicks suffered a torn Achilles tendon at midseason. Led all Eagles LBs with 99 tackles, which helped him earn a five-year, $40 million contract extension. 8. Shaq Thompson, Carolina His skills in run-stopping and coverage in Carolina's "Big Nickel" package allow the Panthers to remain primarily in their base defense rather than have to substitute an extra defensive back. This allows Carolina to blitz DBs more than any other team. 9. Myles Jack, Jacksonville His first year as a full-time understudy went smoothly, which is a credit to Jack's work ethic and the tutoring of teammate Paul Posluszny. Could possibly be returning to play at middle linebacker because of Posluszny's retirement. 10. Mychal Kendricks, Cleveland After floundering in his first year under coordinator Jim Schwartz, Kendricks produced 73 tackles and teamed with Nigel Bradham to help anchor the NFL's top-ranked run defense (79.2 ypg). A cap casualty with the Eagles, Kendricks signed a one-year deal in early June to join the Browns. 11. Kyle Van Noy, New England 12. Tahir Whitehead, Oakland 13. Lorenzo Alexander, Buffalo 14. Jamie Collins, Cleveland 15. Christian Kirksey, Cleveland 16. Vontaze Burfict, Cincinnati 17. Kiko Alonso, Miami 18. Christian Jones, Detroit 19. Devon Kennard, Detroit 20. He's my projected top LB this year. C.J. Mosley, BAL: A Pro Bowler three of his first four seasons, Mosley tied his career high in tackles last year (132) and is s steady presence in the stat department. He's a lower risk than the next few guys. Alec Ogletree, NYG: Ogletree had an offseason and makes a change of scenery, so he's worth a look as a Top 5 LB. Tons of upside, some risk. Jamie Collins, CLE: Collins is another game breaker type with upside and considerable risk. Blake Martinez, GB: Martinez could be a Top 10 LB this season and he had a monster year in 2017. 144 total tackles might be hard to repeat with Rodgers healthy, but 120+ is well within reach. Luke Kuechly, CAR: Kuechly is great, but the concussions are too scary for me to risk with a top pick. Christian Kirksey, CLE: Kirksey is a grinder who's just reaching his prime. He's a big-time sleeper and he could surprise this year. Bobby Wagner, SEA: Wagner is a risk with his history of soft-tissue injuries and doesn't seem committed to a future in Seattle. But he's still a great player with upside. Kwon Alexander, TB: Alexander missed a few games last season but is a good candidate for an under-the-radar bounce back. Lavonte David, TB: David had a down season with Kwon Alexander breaking out but he's still the best all-around LB in Tampa. Telvin Smith, JAC: The Jags defense is crowded with talent and Smith is one of many excellent defenders. The numbers took a hit in 2017. Zach Brown, WAS: Brown is a three-down LB who wraps up tackles and generates a decent amount of sacks and turnovers. He's a nice sleeper here. Malcolm Smith, SF: I like this landing spot for Smith, who is primed for a breakout season and another 120+ tackles. Wesley Woodyard, TEN: Woodyard is a veteran LB with limited upside but plenty of value in his steadiness. With Williamson gone and a rookie taking that spot, he'll be pressed into more of a leadership role. Preston Brown, CIN: Brown logged the second-most snaps among all linebackers last season and will likely play middle linebacker over Vincent Rey once Vontaze Burfict's four-game suspension is done. LB2 with upside. Eric Kendricks, MIN: Kendricks has started 41 games in his first three seasons, averaging over 100 tackles a season with 7.5 total sacks. He's a solid LB2. Von Miller, DEN: Miller usually gets drafted too soon but in leagues where sacks generate huge points, he's worth it. Mark Barron, LAR: The converted safety plays a great role in this Rams defense and he'll be a great 4-3 fit. Roquan Smith, CHI: The rookie LB gets a perfect situation coming into Chicago -- where somebody needs to make some tackles. He could rack up 130-140 total tackles if he's a three-down backer. Leighton Vander Esch, DAL: I'll buy into the hype for IDP purposes since the Dallas defense is likely to be without Sean Lee for his usual 4-5 games. If this is the next Urlacher, then sign me up for the 120+ tackles and lots of big plays.

I think Mac will franchise tag Lee if he doesn’t accept the first offer You're really not joking? I'll put up $100 against your $10 and say that Darron Lee will not be franchise tagged. I'm sorry Phil but this thread is kinda ridiculous. Darron Lee has definitely underperformed but he did look better towards the end of last year's regular season. We need a few weeks of real football to make a judgement on this guy, especially after he seems to have been given increased responsibility with play-calling on D. I know Bart Scott called him out for how he's hitting in preseason so far. I'm reserving judgement for now but I don't see anyway he's getting cut. He won't get the 5th year option triggered but I don't see them cutting a mediocre starter who is on a rookie $ contract.

If every teams GM looked at players Phil's way, half the roster of every team would have to be replaced every year.

Stupid Colts kept him.
#27TheDominator
Whether Lee is good or bad, he is precisely the kind of guy that we want on the field this season. A high upside athlete that has at least shown to be semi-worthy of playing time. We talk about developing players, he is a guy that we should be working with. Not some string of UDFAs and special teams players that either can't run or weight 218.
UntouchableCrew
Obviously there is no chance he gets cut before he plays out his four year rookie deal which is fully guaranteed, barring some kind of locker room or off field issue. It looks less and less likely he gets the fifth year option.

There are hundred+ players who got off to slow starts, then became real good players .Bowman[the guy that phil likes to mention], sat on the bench his rookie year. Beerfish
The problem with lee imo is that his issues are not fixable. If you are soft you don;t suddenly get tough, if you have poor instincts or take bad angles that often does not improve. His one good attribute is moving fast from side to side or from the back side to make plays but because he is hesitant, takes bad angles and has poor instincts he makes plays down field, not near the line of scrimmage. He is also locked into his position. I see people suggesting he be an olb but he cannot set the edge at all and does not have ling arms, a bend or instincts to get to the QB. Is he the worst player in the league? No, but as with adams it is were he was drafted and the position that was drafted high and that goes on macs resume. We in essence drafted a guy 6th overall and 20th overall to do the same thing. Stop the run, cover backs and tes and created turnovers. (And these guys so far have not shown they can cover or create turnovers.)
genot
SO FAR. the two key words in your post. Lets not forget also, one of our D-lineman was dogging it most of time, making it harder on everyone else to do their jobs.
