Popular Post GaryM
There was one constant in the New York Jets 7-9, 2019 season, their defense. While the offense had its trials and tribulations, the D hung tough. They finished the year seventh in the NFL for total yards allowed (5170), fifth in yards per play (5.0), and second against the run (1391 yards). They did have some problems against the pass, finishing 17th overall. In 2020 Gang Green should be better and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams may be a big part of it. NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah believes Williams will have a breakout this season. On his “Moving the Sticks” podcast earlier this week, Jeremiah and partner Bucky Brooks discussed why the sophomore DT is ready to step up his game in 2020. Williams, the third overall draft pick in 2019, had a pedestrian rookie campaign. His play wasn’t great, but it wasn’t awful either. In 13 games, he made 28 tackles with 2.5 quarterback sacks. Many expected more from a high draft pick, who came out of a pro-ready college program such as Alabama and considered his season a disappointment. “He had 2.5 sacks last year, did not have a big-time impact at all for the Jets. I don’t know how great he is as a fit in Gregg Williams’ defense but Gregg Williams has been a good defensive coordinator in this league for a very long time. He’s going to get more comfortable with him and how to use him.” Williams was one of the best defensive linemen in the 2019 draft. Not a top recruit, he redshirted his first year with the Crimson Tide, so he only played two years of college football, The young man from Birmingham, Alabama was dominant when he finally got his chance. In his sophomore season of 2018, Williams had 71 tackles, 19.5 for loss with 8.0 sacks. Those are incredible numbers for anyone but almost unheard of for a defensive tackle. He was practically unstoppable, no matter how often he drew a double-team. That goes back to why he was selected so high. “I just can’t believe that we’re not going to see a better version of this kid. As dominant as he was in the SEC, the best division in college football. They couldn’t block him. It didn’t matter who they were playing against. Quinnen Williams was unblockable. I just have to believe that we’re going to see that player emerge here. We’re going to see more from him. Williams has plenty of time to make the Aaron Donald-esque impact the New York Jets want from him, from the interior defensive line. All rookies have to adjust to the NFL. Some take a little longer than others. Jeremiah reminded everyone about why Williams was worthy of the third overall pick, just behind Nick Bosa, and the potential he has to be a force along the line of scrimmage. If Williams can improve and put pressure on quarterbacks from the inside, it will take some of the pressure off of the cornerbacks and edge rushers. An already dominating Jets defense can become even better.

Popular Post Bungaman
I think the year of experience, time in the weight and nutrition program, and just growing a year older will help. Jets723
I agree I expect a big year. Look I understand that many fans are down on him because he didn’t have a monster rookie year but it’s not like he was bad. He did good things despite not getting a lot of sacks. Was he great? No but I do think injuries had a lot to do with it. Kid is really talented

A player of his stature coming out of THE premier division 1 college football program should be ready to make an immediate impact. That did not happen. Consider that Qunnien has had - 3 years of conditioning and Nutrion from arguably the best program in college football history. - 2 years of play on that pro level Alabama team. - 1 entire private pre draft training program and nutrition from personal trainers. - 1 entire training camp with an NFL team. - 1 entire season with an NFL team ...and he still looks liked the Stay Puft marshmallow man. I want him to breakout and be a beast for his entire career, but saying that's all a player of his stature needs to be great is silly.

KRL
At minimum I need to see: 16 Games 50+ Tackles 7+ Sacks 15+ TFL For the #3 pick out of Alabama that's not too much to ask 3
Beerfish
A 3rd overall pick in the draft is not some developmental long term project guy who slowly moves along to 5 sacks, then 8 sacks. He has his rookie excuse year out of the way he has to be vastly better and a force on the inside that teams have to worry about or it was a fail pick. 2
FidelioJet
Daniel Jeremiah is wrong. It was obvious QW simply wasn’t explosive enough to be a difference maker. He may turn into a quality starting caliber run stopper but it’s unrealistic to expect anything more 2 1
Drums
If he has been putting in the work this offseason, I think he can definitely make a bigger impact and with time, I think he can be better than what we got out of LW. I like him and hope to see more. Maybe he can get his old number back, doesn’t even need to change the name in the back.

AFJF
DJ is right. QW showed some great traits down the stretch last season. He's spending this offseason getting stronger, should be healthy and playing with a year under his belt. Big year in 2020.

Kleckineau
Last year I viewed QW as a fat, pretty strong but not too mobile DT If he is to take it up a few notches he better convert some fat to muscle or he will remain ordinary.

GreenReaper
The more QW improves...the better this defense will be. Can be a legit top 5 D...if he becomes a Beast. I'm hoping his "breakout" this season...will result in him getting 6-8 sacks, and numerous hits and pressures...while being double teamed. It will be a huge boost to the revamped secondary's effectiveness. As well as for GW's pass rushing schemes. Would help versatile draftee's like Ashtyn Davis and Bryce Hall...being effective both in the secondary and in GW's blitz schemes. And also a raw but talented edge guy like Zuniga. Maybe help revitalize Anderson for the pass rush too. I'm sure GW got QW's attention...to work out his ass this offseason...to be a more significant contributor for this year's D...

The guy sprained his ankle in the first game of the season and was in a walking boot. Kinda hard to show your speed and to anchor in the trenches with a high ankle sprain. If now fully healed and after a full year in an NFL strength program, we should finally see the beast that we drafted.

Popular Post KRL
Its fine to be disappointed in Williams rookie year, he didn't play up to his draft status. But let's not lie about him, he was a dominant DLineman on an elite Alabama team in the best conference in college football. He wasn't a JAG, Alabama was on TV every week and Williams dominated every week. His talent now has to come out in the pros 5
