Popular Post Defense Wins Championships
Marvin Harrison. Drafted by Indianapolis of 1996. With the 19th overall pick of the 1st round. Two years before Peyton Manning. Throughout his first two years in the NFL and before heading into his 3rd year (his 1st season alongside of a rookie Manning) a younger Marvin Harrison hadn't yet won his first SB (ended up winning one), hadn't yet been voted into the Pro Bowl (ended up going 8x), hadn't yet been selected to an All-Pro team (ended up becoming selected 6x) and also haven't yet reached 1,000+ receiving yards (and wouldn't reach 1,000+ receiving yards until his 4th year during Manning's 2nd season) and throughout Marvin's first 2 seasons of play (before #18) he had combined for 64 and 73 receptions for 836 and 866 receiving yards along with 8 and 6 TD receptions). Tarik Glenn: Drafted by Indianapolis of 1997. With the 19th overall pick of the 1st round.1 year before Peyton Manning. Peyton's blind side @ LT for 9 years (10 year NFL career). Ended up making 3 Pro Bowls (2004-2006) and winning a SB (started every single game throughout 9/10 years of NFL play). Heading into the 1998 NFL draft the Colts were coming off a 3-13 record (1997). But once the Colts had drafted Peyton Manning with the #1 overall draft pick and by the time he could've walked up to the podium... Indianapolis had already (and immediately) formed and created their QB/LT/WR trio of the future; WR Harrison (1996), LT Glenn (1997) and QB Peyton (1998). They ended up going 3-13 during Marvin's 3rd season, Glenn's 2nd season and Manning's rookie year. And then it happened. During their very next NFL draft (of 1999) the Indianapolis Colts struck yet again (while continuing to build their offense around an already built trio @ QB/WR/LT). And that's where they selected a RB with the NFL's 4th overall pick of the 1st round out Miami University. Edgerrin James; Drafted by Indianapolis of 1999. With the 4th overall pick of the 1st round.1 year after Peyton Manning. Edge ran for 1,553 rushing yards off of 369 carries and 13 rushing TDs along with 62 receptions for 586 receiving yards and 4 TD receptions with a combined 2,139 yards from scrimmage and 17 offensive TDs as a Rookie and went 13-3 and never looked back (played 7 years for Indy along with 5 years of 1k+ yards, 4 All-Pro's, 4 Pro Bowl's and led the league in rushing; never won a SB, left the year before; but his impact was felt immediately and helped Manning's development tremendously). Indianapolis had just created an offensive Grand Slam with Manning (QB), Glenn (LT), Harrison (WR) and Edge (RB) throughout 1996-1999 (they immediately improved to 13-3 and never looked back) And by the time the likes of these 3 arrived... WR Reggie Wayne of 2001 (1st round, 30th overall). DE Freeney of 2002 (1st round, 11th overall) and TE Dallas Clark of 2003 (1st round, 24th overall). The Indianapolis Colts Were already prime and now seriously gearing up to win their first Super Bowl Championship as a Franchise since dating back to 1970 (as the Baltimore Colts). It didn't come over night however... (come 2006; they finally won it all). • Trevor Lawrence becomes the 1st overall draft pick of 2021. Has been considered (by many) as a Generational QB prospect. √ (as was Peyton Manning for Indy of 1998). • Mekhi Becton as an 11th overall draft pick. On the verge of returning for his 2nd season. Already labeled as a QB's blind side pass protector. Already being titled as a Franchise LT. Already nicknamed 'Highway-77' (road grade). √ (as was Tarik Glenn drafted one year ahead of Manning, 19th overall). • Denzel Mims as a promising WR (2nd round pick and drafted 1 year before Lawrence). √ (as was Marvin Harrison, drafted 2 years ahead of Manning). • Quinnen Williams being so dominant so early can help put us over the learning curve because he's already waiting for his superstar QB's arrival (compared to Freeney who didn't arrive to the Colts until Our younger Peyton Manning: Trevor Lawrence. Our younger Tarik Glenn: Mekhi Becton. Our younger Marvin Harrison: Denzel Mims. Our younger Dwight Freeney: Quinnen Williams. And that's all before Joe Douglas even A.) Enters FA with A+ available salary cap space and B.) heads into our 1st round following the Lawrence selection with his Seattle pick (2021) or the first overall pick of the 2nd round (imagine all the possibilities) and/or our two 1st round draft picks of 2022. Devonta Smith/Terrace Marshall Jr. (Seattle Pick) as our next Reggie Wayne. Travis Etienne/Najee Harris (First overall pick of the 2nd round) as our next Edge James. 2022's two first round picks @ LG/Center (creating a Dallas Cowboys type of O-Line) or even a 1st round TE as our next Dallas Clark. This thread wasn't created specifically to compare specific players to one another however my thoughts were moreso focused on similar Franchise circumstances and how Indy began to build both before and after Manning. 9 2 4

If it takes you 5 minutes to read it'll take me less than 1 hour to write up. Because I've been thinking about the possibilities of Trevor Lawrence, Mekhi Becton, Denzel Mims and Quinnen Williams @ QB/LT/WR/DT behind A+ available salary cap space and A+ draft assets for a while now. And for a historically losing Franchise the Indianapolis Colts were the first team that came to mind around Peyton Manning, Tarik Glenn, Marvin Harrison and Dwight Freeney @ QB/LT/WR/DE. And with so many Free Agent WRs potentially available (Allen Robinson/JuJu Smith-Schuster/Chris Godwin) and/or 2021's WR draft class being as deep as 2014's and 2020's; I was thinking that maybe we could find Trevor Lawrence his next "Reggie Wayne". And with two A+ RB prospects in Travis Etienne and Najee Harris coming out; I thought maybe we could land Trevor Lawrence his next "Edge James" type of playmaking RB. PS: For being such a "new" poster here on JN; you sure do feel comfortable enough to ask a lot of questions... I (now) have question(s) for you. Which previous username were you as a poster? Or did you just all of a sudden wake up as a "Jets fan" and just now created a username; despite JN being around since the early to mid 2000's? Some of us @ JN still enjoying putting together a little thought process into threads (while talking football) and for someone so "new" such as yourself; would you care to show us any of your work as a "new" poster? Because none of us have seen any of it yet out of you thus far... ??♂️? When I think of the Colts yeah I think about Bob Sanders @ SS (2nd rounder, so maybe we should keep Marcus Maye; who I've been hard on) and Robert Mathis @ DE too (5th rounder) but the 7 main players who come to mind are... QB: Peyton Manning (#1 overall). LT: Tarik Glenn (1st round). RB: Edge James (1st round).. WR: Marvin Harrison (1st round). WR: Reggie Wayne (1st round). TE: Dallas Clark (1st round). D-Line: Dwight Freeney (1st round). I believe that heading into 2021 we can already have a lot of theses positions full with A+ building blocks (as did a younger Indianapolis team). QB: Trevor Lawrence (#1 overall). LT: Mekhi Becton (1st round).. RB: Travis Etienne (1st round, Seattle pick). WR: Denzel Mims (2nd round).. WR: Allen Robinson (#1 FA). Slot: Jamison Crowder (best Jets slot receiver since Chrebet). TE: Pat Freiermuth (first pick of 2nd round). D-Line: Quinnen Williams. Would Jet fans not be excited over that offensive attack and would Sanchez/Darnold not be jealous of those players surrounding the QB position? (Not including our two 3rd round picks). And suddenly the Jets are looking like a Franchise on the rise (especially on offense) before heading into 2022's draft; with two 1st round picks and another 2nd rounder (where we can absolutely load up on O-Line, CB and Edge rusher). ✓ we may stink right now before Lawrence; but Indy stunk before getting Manning too).
