Forget Mt. Rushmore, what 4 Jet starters do you want replaced in 2021?

Recommended Posts

I can put up some names based on last year's bad/mediocre/uneven performances from guys like Herndon, Lewis and GVR, etc. but I honestly want to see all of the guys who have been retained for 2021 get an opportunity with this new coaching staff and systems.  Maybe a light bulb goes on for some guys now?  Herndon is interesting because he looked like he was on a decent trajectory in Year 1 (similar to Darnold) with the old coaching staff and then seemed to go downhill the past two years.

We'll have a much better idea of who we want to see gone once we get to something like Week 8 in these new systems and find out who is excelling in them and who isn't.

I don't think we have either aa glaringly bad starter or a malcontent that needs replacing. Training camp might decide 7 or 8 starters all of whom could be rookies. We are weak at TE but none of them really fall into categories above either. I think our roster is so much better it is maybe a better question of who the 4 cuts that will hurt the most will be

Chuma Edoga, Daniel Brown, Chris Herndon, Corey Ballentine, Vinny Curry, Josh Adams, Conor McDermott, Bennett Jackson, Dan Feeney, Lawrence Cager, CJ Mosley, Jeff Smith, Alex Lewis, and Josh Malone can all kick rocks and tell their story walkin'!!!

And Denzel Mims better show something real quick or he can beat it too!

I’ve gotta say, for the first time in a long time, I don’t have a lot of names here. Certainly I want RG figured out, but we don’t know who the starter IS yet, let alone get to replacing them. RB looks sneaky competitive and competent. And our WR group is solid. TE is an obvious answer but I see the slow build JD is doing. No issue there either.

On D, I’m anxious to see how our CB work out and our WILL lb will be interesting but again, no major “get this guy out of here”. It’s a real breath of fresh air to have some potential and infusion of young talent to the roster. They’re not ready to win yet but the optimism is palpable for once.

In reference to RG, I think you should trust the process. JD has placed enough pieces to compete for that job. With other positional groups theres a lot of question marks there. I understand your concern but Rome wasn't built in a day. We're not going to compete this season anyway IMO. I think JD's primary concern right now is protecting Zach Wilson.

There's been so many new additions that I'm not exactly sure who the starters are at this point.

Positions that I hope we address with premium picks in next year's draft:

Center, Edge rusher, Tight End

I'll add Tackle to that if Big ticket doesn't get healthy and/or we don't extend Moses.

Ficken- I don't care, find anyone else, we have to move on and get a kicker where at least we can hope for a gem. Mediocrity is not worth a commitment and thats what Ive seen from Ficken ever since hes been a Jet.

Coleman- Let Ty slide into this spot and operate with Carter and Perine. And if Coleman is a pass blocker only I'd rather see the roster spot go elsewhere anyway.

Lewis/Feeney/GVR: Now I don't want to cut or trade these guys. I want them to be backups. If any of these guys end up starting that means we are using Fant as a 6th lineman and Clark was beaten out. Thats not good. I would much rather Clark stepped in and won that starting spot in camp. At least he's got a ton of upside and hes the youngest of the bunch. Otherwise would love JD to swing a trade for a proven starter. I get it, patience, draft a G next year. But this is just what I wish would happen and means nothing.

Blake Cashman: If Cashman is the starter that means one of Sherwood/Namsah wasn't ready to handle the responsibility of that WILL spot in the wide nine. I'm pretty sure its not easy. But Cashman starting only prolongs the inevitable, the Jets getting rid of him because hes constantly hurt.

Blair/Curry: Assuming JFM holds on to the DE spot. One of these guys will be the starters as the 'Edge' specialist across from  Lawson. I'm all for the signings and having some veteran leadership and a guy who understands the defense- BUT, it pretty much means guys like Huff and Zuniga and Phillips couldn't make enough of an impact as a pass rusher to earn that spot. That would be disappointing.

Wesco: Honestly, I think this FB experiment will fail. I wanted the Jets to get a FB in FA or the draft who they felt would be a better fit and could add a running threat. Wesco is limited and inexperienced. When he's on the field its almost guaranteed its a run play. LaFleur would need to use him as a receiver or runner to keep teams at least a little honest. I'm open to seeing how it turns out but would rather not see him as the starter.

Some of these guys are not guaranteed spots on the roster despite potentially being starters.

Good post. Huff has already flashed and got first team reps. Let's hope that continues.

We will definitely make some painful cuts. It's why I want to just ride with Morgan or White as #2, other to PS and no veteran and not bring in a veteran corner because we have a lot of athleticism and promise to develop there,

Its bad when Flacco, who doesn't care about anything anymore, is the best player on that list.

I believed there was a real chance Flacco would retire when he realized he was going to have to start multiple games.

I don't necessarily want all these players off the team but I do want us to have better starters than them in 2021

Center: McGovern

Right Guard: Van Roten

CB2: Bless Austin

TE: They all got issues

Edge: Lawson not gunna do it himself and he's not a game changer anyways he's just the best we had in a while but its a low bar

There's no reason why McGovern can't return to being a top 10 or so Center in 2021, like he was in 2019.  I'm not sure what happened to him in 2020 but I'm confident a bounce back season is coming for him.

RG is always an option for him too, if the Jets do indeed acquire a better Center next offseason.  Meaning either way he's back in 2022, and in this instance he'd just end up being the Van Roten upgrade you're looking for.
