OT: Things I miss about NY

Credit cards pretty rare. Like an actual line of credit. Most are charge cards (remember those?) and of course they have debit cards. We do use cash a fair amount. But one thing they are ahead on is paying bills. Everything is done by bank transfer. Water, heat, rent, doctor, housekeeper, everything.

Was just thinking that I have actually lived in San Diego for 33 years now but I still miss some things in NY: Of course it has been so long ( I havent even been back since 2014) that maybe these things are no longer true

1. The people. California is not as friendly a place as NY. You rarely know your neighbors. People get easily offended. Everyone is very PC. I miss the warmth of NYers, couple with their in you face honesty and bluntness. I miss the fact that you could get in a literal shouting match with a family member or friend and then 10 mins later go get some pizza like it never happened.

2. Neighborhoods There was a feeling of family in the neighborhood you lived in. You knew all your neighbors, were supported by your neighbors and you were proud and even protective of your neighborhood (Rosedale for me) 

In California for the most part you just have a place to live. Not universally true but the neighborhoods that exist sort of like I remember NY are not many in number and mostly wealthier. Beach towns are just a different thing altogether.

3. Seasons (sort of) San Diego is basically the same 350 days a year. I do miss leaves turning, Christmas lights reflecting off of snow. Early April when the golf courses finally thawed out and had grass. Still I do not miss chipping ice or shoveling snow in even the tiniest bit

4. Food Pizza Just sort of sucks. There are a couple places now that have sort of NY pizza but not really. It's the water actually many pizzerias here use the exact recipes from NY but they just don't  really work. Bread sucks. I miss Veal Parmigiana heros. Miss White Castle though Vegas has them now so not as much as it once was

5. Going to Jets and Mets games. Actually only ever went to 2 Jets game but probably 100 Mets games. I don't even follow baseball anymore. I hear the Mets actually have a pretty good pitcher now. 

6. Miss the smell of the Atlantic Ocean. I know, weird but the Pacific Ocean is just different. And it smells different. In fact I miss the smell of NY so many smells

7/ Manhattan Nothing like that here in California.

I make my own BEC too!  I cheat and use the little doh mans biscuits though.  I add maple syrup to them before baking and make sure the bacon is burnt to a crisp.

I absolutely LOVE living in Charlotte.  But as a kid, in Manhattan in summers and LI for school was a great experience.  NOW, NYC is full of transplants, the neighborhoods are not the same.  I lived in Yorkville.  The apartment was rent controlled.  NOW, those apartments are 4K a month and up.  

In NY people complain about taxes etc… here, nobody leaves   

 

this. i grew up in Bensonhurst, across the street from Sammy the bulls place...my mom still lives around bayridge parkway. most of the people that made the place special are gone. i actually drove to the brooklyn navy yards the other day....it got progressively more and more hipster as you drove from Verrazano to downtown lol

NYC is a dumpsterfire, esp now after corona.

yes the food is still the best in the world, but the idea of neighborhoods and community unfortunately are just nostalgia.

if it wasnt for my mother, sister, and her family...id be in texas or nashville.

The only thing I honestly miss about NY are bagels and Delis there's actually some good pizza and Chinese spots down in Florida that are good enough.  I couldn't imagine not living in NY when I was under 30 now I couldn't imagine spending more then 3 days in that hellhole. lol  I'm past the point in life were I need to be constantly entertained a few games and concerts a year and I'm good.  I am thankful to have grow up in the 90's there pre internet... everyday was an adventure.

Whole Foods has acceptable hard rolls. I can find real bacon there or at a few delis...make it in a cast iron and it’s almost it.

Almost all the yuppies! We were heavy into Tampa for a long while, then Austin, but eventually decided on the Dallas suburbs. My wife’s brother moved to Tampa in 2018 and has a house right by the water so we can always go visit when we want the beach life. But we  have a group of other mid-30s former NYers who have already moved to the Dallas suburbs and my best friend from undergrad and his wife (both NYers) are also moving there next month.

We’re building a custom house which should hopefully be done right before Thanksgiving. Wife and I have lived in the northeast our whole lives (me in CT or NYC and her in MA and then CT). Two kids under 2. With the semi-post-covid haze in full swing and all of our friends and family being vaxed, we’ve had fun things going on every weekend for the past 6 weeks and it looks to continue for the next few months for us. Just last night, my wife turned to me in bed and asked if we were making a mistake leaving Greenwich for Texas. I know that we’re doing the right thing, and I know that she also knows it too, but to say we’re also feeling things is an understatement.

And I already know I’m gonna miss the Pizza and Bagels.

San Diego sux. Same stupid cloud in the sky day after day after day. Damn near EVERYONE is stoned on one thing or another. Younger kids are nasty druggies while the older generation is burnt out on weed. There’s nowhere to walk around except the beach but that gets old quick. Was bored out of my mind. Was there only  a month. That was long enough. Born and bred NYer but I’ve been all over this damn city and state. And it’s definitely not the same anymore. Nothing stays the same I reckon. Pretty much time to move on. But wherever I go, I’ll be taking my Mets Jets Rangers and (Knicks - if they ever get it together) with me.

This thread is kicking my butt. I really miss the old NY. Have lived here my entire life. Was born and raised in Manhattan. Moved around to other boroughs but now can’t afford to live in Manhattan. Live in the Bronx now and HATE it. The city just ain’t the same. I don’t even go to Manhattan anymore since there is NOWHERE to park and I don’t take trains anymore. Azzhole ruined the city and traffic.  I tried leaving NY a few years back and did it ALL wrong, leaving without a job. Went all around the country - NC, Fla, TX, AZ, Cali, Oregan, PA, VA. Just couldn’t find a place I felt comfortable. Blew all my money and had to return. Anyways, I’m so done with winter but can’t take the scorching heat of Fla, Tx, Vegas, Phoenix. Power to those of you who can. Loved the east coast but literally terrified of southern red necks. I lived in Charlottesville a few years back for a bit and split 2 weeks before that ‘thing’ jumped off. I could see it coming a mile away. It’s like being around aliens from a different planet. I gotta make a move really soon though. Was offered a job in New Hampshire making a decent wage but many of the employers I interviewed with were saying ‘well this ain’t NY. The winters here are BRUTAL’ and it’s the #1 state that’s been ravaged by opioid addiction in the country. Nice. I’m at my wits end and really really need some help. @Charlie Brown pray ? for me to find my way!

I absolutely hated winter, and permanent summer is so far definitely working for me. I’m still waiting for reading books on the beach with a couple cold beers to get old. No sign, yet.

Bought a condo in the Channel District in Tampa a few years ago. It’s not NY, but we really enjoy where we live. They’ve basically built an entire new city district since we moved.

Yep. My brother in law bought a condo right next to armature works in ‘18, and just moved into the “forever home” he custom built up in Lutz a few months ago. My wife and I have been down a bunch over the years - lots of former NYers and former MA folks and they’re doing a great job attracting more down there.

What most on this topic miss is the memories they had of NY. Sadly that NY is gone yes I miss the pizza,bagels etc also but the easy living in Naples FL for me works perfectly.

I haven't left. But as I start getting older, getting a southern escape abode appeals to me. We have discussed NC or SC, but hanve't really done much beyond talking about it. 

NYC right now is stupid and expensive. There is no understanding that doing business here is a complete pain in the ass, a daily hassle.There's no sense anyone in charge cares. 

One son is just out of college and may be leaving for Boston depending on a job opportunity. And really Massachussets is much more livable than here.  The other has a good union job and 2 tykes and a wife, so he isn't going anywhere. But really were I 25/30 years younger leaving here wouldn't even be a decision.

I can’t wait to get out of the NYC metro area.   Two more years till my daughter graduates high school and we are out.   We never go into the city anymore, it’s regressing into the s**t hole it was during the Dinkins era.   I’m tempted to sell now since the market is so good for sellers.   We bought a place in South Carolina and can’t wait to get there full time.

Disagree. I have a nice 1 down here in Florida. It took a little bit to find it, but it's very good.

We have two excellent Italian deli’s/ bakeries here in Fort Myers. I can also order my Juniors cheesecake online and delivered the next day. Occasionally Costco carries them as well. There is also a pizza chain here called Jet’s while it certainly not a Classic Ny pie, they make a pan”
Sicilian” pie that is pretty damn good.
What I do miss is Brooklyn Heights and the Promenade, Early Sunday morning walks in the city when it quite and calm. Rides on the Staten Island Ferry and a good dirty water dog and kinish.

I think bagels are 1000x harder to find vs pizza. Theres always a decent pizza place somewhere but you never find real bagels. Plus the real cream cheeses like scallion, my fav

LOVE TAmpa. Brother and mom live in Palm Harbor. had a big client in the industrial area of Clearwater so I was there 6 times a year.  I’m so entrenched in Charlotte I can’t leave and honestly love it here. BUT I could easily call TAmpa home.

You know i moved in 2003. Since then all i hear is how bad and expensive its gotten. I really think this is exaggerated but idk.

In a sick way, i remember nyc in the 70s as a kid. 3 card monte, hustlers, tads steak house, porn everywhere, garbage, grafitti covered trains, prostitutes, classic cars and the abandoned south bronx buildings etc.

I loved it. 
 

Once the city got cleaned up, and all the porn was replaced by disney, it disgusted me.

So as crazy as it sounds, I long for a visit to nyc circa 1978. If it gets that bad again let me know maybe ill visit again. Hell yes ill have my .40 on me lol

I will.  We bought a place on Seabrook Island.  I imagine I’ll be coming up to Clemson for a bunch of football games, it’s an easy ride from Clemson to Charlotte.

Moving every 20 years is a must!

I’m averaging a move every 10 or so years.

Mass - 0 to about 10 yo

NY - 10 to around 22 yo

NJ - 22 to 32 yo

TX - 32 year old to present

Once we are empty nesters, we’ll likely move to Colorado, but that’s TBD. We may just follow our kids. Or may just leave the US all together.
