Bill liked Darnold so much he rolled human trash can Mac Jones out there under center every week for 3 years before finally benching him in favor of comic book side character Bailey Zappe.

Darnold never had a chance here, not even a remote chance.

Idiot (and this is being kind) mccagnan drafted like 3 oline in 5 years before drafting his franchise QB.

We had no oline, a center who could not snap the ball at all.  Terrible offensive coaches.   Zero weapons.

He was throwing to jeff smith , malone and hogan a guy that after being like our #1 or #2 wr due to injuries here was playing pro lacrosse a year or so later.

Whether Darnold turns out good long term for minny or not who knows but the way he was handled was a total disgrace.

Then to compound the issue instead of sticking with him one more year and drafting premium player (jamar chase, penei sewell) the jets draft zach wilson.

Probably.  He may have a good season but still he should regress to be the qb he’s always been in his first 6 yrs in the nfl.

I heard them say on the Vikings broadcast yesterday that Sam admitted he really learned how to study / prepare / watch film by seeing how Purdy did it for 1 year in SF.

The Jets did fail to put a support system around Sam as far as actually teaching him how to approach and play the QB position at an NFL level.

This was actually as important if not more important than surrounding him with "weapons".

Rob Calabrese was a first-time NFL assistant.

You can't compare that to what guys like Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers had in their situations with QB coach gurus like Clyde Christensen and Tom Clements.

Darnold’s skills guys his rookie year were Robbie Anderson, a busted up Quincy Enunwa, and Jermaine Kearse. His backs were Isiah Crowell and a broken down Bilal Powell. His center is Spencer Long. 
 

The next year, with the third pick, they take Quinnen Williams. Next pick, Jachai Polite. Next pick, Chuma Edoga. His center is Ryan Kalil. His big adds on offense were Jamison Crowder and Braxton Berrios

And yet, he flamed out in Carolina with DJ Moore once McCaffrey got hurt in year 4. He was a flawed prospect who went to a really bad organization.

I would have taken the option of keeping Darnold to see what he could do with LaFleur for 1y a million times over and twice on Sundays over the ill-conceived torture also known as the Zach Wilson experience.

Also, we liked him alot.  We spent multiple draft picks to move up to get him, and gave him three full seasons to show us he was legit.

Bill hates the Jets, always has.  Not taking anything he says seriously on this one, even if there is, perhaps, a debate to be had of Darnold vs. Drafting Wilson, same as there was at the time.

Does any reasonable thinking jets fan not think this franchise completely screwed him over? The longer you watch the game, the more you realize that the destination may be more important than the skill set in determining if a qb will make it or not. Darnold was arguably put in the worst possible situation a top 5 pick has been put in over the last decade. I for one am happy to see Darnold was strong enough to not let his early failures destroy his career. Outside of the game vs us, I hope he crushes it this season.

Not sure what "like" has to do with it. Even by the time he was off the team, I don't think any fan or member of the organization truly disliked Sam.

I wasn't here on the board, I'm sure some folks hated him as a scapegoat.

The Jets have to own up to surrounding sam with poor talent and arguably poorer coaching. A better prospect likely wouldn't have succeeded. But it's not like he suffered the level of vitriol Zach Wilson did...

thats an interesting situation. if Darnold plays really well and they make the playoffs does Minnesota just let him go because they drafted that kid at 10? or do they trade him and keep Sam?

Darnold is not the next great QB.  He is what he is (which is a bottom shelf NFL QB to be as generous as possible) and he will prove it as long as he's given chances to start games. He will be on his 5th team in 2025 when McCarthy is healthy.
