Can't argue with a single thing from this article... Uggh... I can't do anything but hope the bye week and more time to work together as a unit will have helped these guys.

“The prior administration, they severely neglected the offensive line and you just can’t do that in today’s NFL," Woody said. “Any successful team ... usually they have good offensive lines. The Jets, unfortunately, have done a very poor job of drafting offensive linemen ... and developing guys. Now you’re paying the piper.”

“Are these guys talking?" Woody, now with ESPN, said. "What is the coaching like? How are these guys being coached during the week? Because these things that you’re seeing on Sunday, there’s nothing crazy about what these teams are doing, but they’re beating them up front, which is alarming.”

For his part, offensive line coach Frank Pollack did shoulder some of the blame when addressing reporters Tuesday."

They don't have to be a top, elite unit! They just need to be average... Even below average would somehow be an improvement.

pssssst- IT'S THE PLAYERS!!!

In his lone season in Cincinnati before joining the Jets, Pollack oversaw an offensive line that was transitioning to four new starters from the start of the previous season, including a first-time starter in second-year undrafted guard Alex Redmond and rookie center Billy Price. Despite the change, the line finished in the top third of the league in sacks allowed while producing 4.69 yards per carry, the eighth-best average in the league and helped pave the way for running back Joe Mixon’s 1,168 rushing yards and eight touchdowns rushing.

Indeed, a lot of people thought this was a good hire...me included.  Did all of a sudden he become brain dead?  I read this week its the 1st time AG and FP met to review and discuss the OL.... let me repeat that.  The 1st time...   I think Woody is right its coaching, communication between coaches and scheme (zone blocking).

How many starting QB's did the Bengals use in their first 3 games - convince me that , that fact doesn't matter.

All good points but Gase doesn't watch TV. Gase doesn't go on the internet so Gase doesn't get any others point of views which can help him and Gase is so stubborn he probably doesn't think to ask the O lineman which plays they feel better about and he probably thinks he knows how to fix the line himself so he won't take any advice anyway. If Im Joe Douglas Im all over this problem all week and hopefully come up with a good plan for next weeks practices. If this doesn't get fixed real quick its not gonna be a fun season at all.

Good news about Jets’ brutally bad offensive line? All 5 starters are easily replaceable ... very soon

Jets’ Le’Veon Bell diagnoses ailing offense

The Jets’ offensive line has been inexcusably bad through three gamesand at this point, it’s fair to wonder whether the five starters within that unit have the requisite talent to get the job done at the NFL level.

That, obviously, is bad.

But there is a small silver lining: General manager Joe Douglas could feasibly get rid off all five players after this season, which would allow him to totally overhaul the unit within just a few months.

How? Well, here’s a detailed look at the contract status and monetary math attached to all five starters:

LT Kelvin Beachum

Contract: Final year of three-year, $24 million deal

2020 status: Unrestricted free agent

Analysis: It sure seems unlikely that the Jets would offer to re-sign or extend Beachum, who has been declining for a few years now, considering he’s 30 years old. The fact that he’s at the end of his contract makes for an easy breakup.

LG Kelechi Osemele

Contract: Fourth year of five-year, $58.5 million deal

2020 status: Signed, $11.7 million cap hit

Analysis: Yes, Osemele is signed through 2020. But he has no guaranteed money left on his deal, meaning the Jets would not incur any dead money if they cut him loose this offseason. So, Douglas would save all $11.7 million and be able to put that toward other players. This year, Osemele carries a $10.2 million cap hit. He hasn’t played up to that level, let alone the level required to collect next year’s raise. The 30-year-old can easily be sent packing.

C Ryan Kalil Contract: Playing on one-year, $8.4 million deal

2020 status: Unrestricted free agent

Analysis: Another simple one here. The Kalil experiment has not panned out; his struggles have been among the core reasons for this unit’s failure. Turns out, coming out of retirement and learning a new scheme in three weeks at age 34 may have been a bad idea.

RG Brian Winters

Contract: Third year of four-year, $29 million deal

2020 status: Signed, $7.5 million cap hit

Analysis: Winters, like Osemele, has one year remaining, but also has no more guaranteed money left in his contract. He’s also due for a $1 million raise over his 2019 number. Frankly, it was a mild surprise the Jets didn’t cut Winters loose prior to this season, because they could have done so with no cap penalty this past winter, too. But, better late than never, right?

RT Brandon Shell

Contract: Final year of four-year, $2.576 million deal

2020 status: Unrestricted free agent

Analysis: Shell falls into the same bucket as Beachum and Kalil. But, unlike with those guys, retaining Shell would likely require a substantial pay raise – that’s what happens when players graduate from their rookie contracts to a second NFL deal. Perhaps Douglas could still get him at a relative bargain, if he feels like filling all five spots in one offseason is too much to handle. But if Douglas doesn’t think Shell is good enough, he can let him walk for nothing.

Verdict

Will Douglas actually part ways with all five of these players? It’s too early to tell, really. Finding five new starters on the offensive line may be too tall a task for one offseason, though; if Douglas thinks that’s the case, then Winters and Shell may be the most likely candidates to return. Why? Because they’re both the youngest and cheapest of the bunch, at 28 and 27, respectively. Either way, the built-in flexibility of all these contract situations certainly is helpful for Douglas, who can now pick and choose his spots at will – with no financial penalty – this winter.

Sad thing is there is a group of fans, not scouting "professionals"on this board who have been saying this for 5-6 years - don't need a phd to understand this yet the Jets front office continue to screw it up

The Ohio State head coach said and proved it last night, this game is won in the trenches - protect the QB and hit the other QB - Jets have not drafted a player with this skills for a decade

You hit the nail on the head, fans talk about how bad Gase is, yet,how in the hell can you get any offensive momentum going behind this O line. No holes for one of the best RB’s in the game. No time for the QB to go thru there progressions. This is the reason I will not prejudge Gase until this unit gets going or gets gone.

I like Darnold, I think he'll be a good QB, but the Jets needed a QB & this goes back to the idiotic drafting of Christian Hackenberg in the 2nd round! Jets could have had another player at that spot (Olineman Maybe?), plus there would have been a good chance they might have drafted either Watson or Mahomes in 2017. Then they wouldn't have had to trade 3 number 2 picks & could have been in play for Nelson. That Hackenberg miss was the beginning of the end for MaccCoffee. It set off a domino affect that has us where we are today.

Woody must check out the board. I’m also sure that PAC is Charlie Casserly.

Charley Casserly was the guy that sprayed us with lighter fluid, Bowles & Macc, then lit the match and slinked away like giant smirking elf.

Belichick must look at this organization & just thank god he resigned on that napkin years ago, lol. BB has actually degraded Casserly in the past for being an idiot, so what does our idiot owner Woody Johnson do? He takes advise from him & we end up with Bowles & MaccCoffee!

I mean seriously, could you just picture BB, Ernie Adams & Kraft just sitting around the Gillette stadium offices laughing their azzes off?

Woody was and is a f*cking idiot! He hires a basically headhunters & we end up with Idzik, lol. He compounds that moronic move with getting advice from the giant ELF Casserly. Joe Willy from these board would have been a better choice ?.

How can Jets’ Joe Douglas fix abysmal offensive line? Early look at 2020 draft, free-agent options

Joe Douglas made it very clear from his very first day as the Jets’ general manager: The offensive line is a priority.

So far this season, that unit has been a total debacle for a variety of reasons. But Douglas will have a chance to completely overhaul that unit this offseason – really, his first in charge of the roster – if he’s aggressive.

Why? Right tackle Brandon Shell and left tackle Kelvin Beachum are both in the final year of their deals. Center Ryan Kalil is playing on a one-year contract. Left guard Kelechi Osemele and right guard Brian Winters can both be cut with no dead cap hit this offseason.

In other words, all five guys can easily be replaced if this poor performance continues.

But, how could Douglas go about filling those five holes when the time comes this spring?

We figured Jets fans could use some optimistic daydreaming, given the team’s horrific 0-3 start. So, here is a best-case scenario for how the offensive line could look this time next year, if Douglas nails all his free-agent signings and draft picks:

Left tackle: Andrew Thomas, NFL Draft (Georgia)

Thomas is probably the best offensive line talent available in the draft – which means he’s going to go early in the first round. Jets fans obviously hope the team isn’t picking that high, but right now, at least, they’re on pace to. The Jets haven’t taken an offensive linemen in the first round since 2006. That trend needs to end in 2020. One way or another, Douglas must pick an offensive lineman early on. Filling the left tackle spot, arguably the most important on the line, with fresh, young legs would be a wise move.

Left guard: Joe Thuney, free agent (Patriots)

What better way to strengthen the offensive line than by simultaneously hurting the Patriots’ unit? The guard market isn’t looking all that great this spring, but Thuney is the youngest of the good ones at age 26. The Jets need to get younger on the line, so he fits that bill. Plus, he’s a stellar run-blocker, which should help maximize running back Le’Veon Bell.

Center: Tyler Biadasz, NFL Draft (Wisconsin)

Perhaps Douglas would feel more comfortable grabbing a free agent at this spot, too, in order to anchor the line with some experience. But we believe the GM should chase youth and upside, in order to best build long term, at the pivot. Biadasz could go in the first round, which may make him unavailable to the Jets. But if they can trade back into the round or if Biadasz slips into the second, then the Jets would suddenly have two reliable pieces on relatively cheap contracts for the next four or five years, in combination with Thomas. That would be huge.

Right guard: Brandon Scherff, free agent (Redskins)

Schreff recently received a contract-extension offer from the Redskins, but there is some belief that he’d prefer to stand pat and hit free agency at the end of this season instead. He’s likely to command top dollar, as guards go, because of his massive impact in the run game. But Schreff’s big cap hit would more or less get balanced out by having two rookies on the line, both of whom would come with very manageable cap numbers. He’s worth the investment, too, because he’s still in his prime at age 27.

Right tackle: George Fant, free agent (Seahawks)

Again, we’re thinking young(ish) here; Fant will be 28 next season. The fun part about Fant is that he’s versatile; the Seahawks occasionally use him as a sixth lineman/tight end, when they need additional help up front. In other words, he’s good enough that the coaches scheme up extra ways to make use of his talent.

You either forgot Woody saying the following or you are cherry picking as part of an agenda:

Only good thing about this OL is that Douglas will be forced to make changes next season.  Beachum, Kalil and Shell are UFA.  Winters and KO can both be cut with no cap implications and would save $18MM cap space.  Hopefully we will find out if Harrison and Edoga are part of the answere for next season, becuase if they are, we should be able to find three other starters.  One with a likely top 10 pick in the draft, and we can use that $18MM cap space to find two others.

As for Gase, I can't absolve him of responsibility because the OL is bad.  The OL is part of the team he coaches.  The OL coach is his hire.  The 5 guys who are playing now were all decent, not great, but decent starters last year.  Either they all turned to suck overnight, or something else is going on which Gase/Pollack need to figure out by next Sunday.

And if there are guys who did turn into suck overnight, then Gase/Pollack have to see this and replace them.  We have 3 experienced back-ups and a promising rookie to choose from on the bench.  Lewis, Compton, Harrison &/or Edoga need to get a shot.
