Right to Bear Arms

Passed by Congress September 25, 1789. Ratified December 15, 1791. The first 10 amendments form the Bill of Rights

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

It's a RIGHT and not a privilege. NY's firearms laws are unconstitutional.

The bill of rights didn't apply to the States or local government in 1791 or ever.  Only the Federal government.  Without the strict constructionist expansion of the rights under the 14th amendment you would have zero argument on this.

The fact that he was Drafted by the Jets, should give you a general idea of his intelligence level, or lack thereof. We're not into drafting geniuses.

It's not money, it's values, work ethic etc.  Williams appears to lack in that area.  I didn’t realize his gun was packed away etc... so yes, my first assessment was a bit harsh now that the news had changed. I assumed he had it with him.

Dude the guy thought he was compliant, went to do what he was supposed to do, check his gun.  when they found out he only had a permit and the gun shouldn't have been transported he was brought in.  Its all the high and mighty who have turned him into anything from an idiot to a POS who lacks values, work ethic, who's lazy etc who need to look in a mirror and get off their high horse.

Its not this hard, shouldn't be.  At some point when the story comes out, when twitter isn't judge and jury once again, people need to chill out

I thought that;s what I said...   I first thought he simply caried the gun to the airport.  On learning he packed it away, and thought he was compliant I stated " My first response was a bit harsh".

OK, I guess I missed it.  Thanks then...

Not blaming you either way, just think its funny that most of 15 pages on this comments are as harsh or worse and there aren't many who have taken back the conclusions they jumped to prematurely.

This makes me think of LOTR, when Gandalf said Pippin is a fool, but an honest fool (or whatever the line was).

It seems he didn't do anything so terrible, so far as he knew, and in his mind he was complying and not being at all secretive or trying to get away with anything.

It was still a dumbass thing to do. Particularly for a guy who played for a NY team all season. It wasn't so long ago that Plaxico, by shooting himself in the ass, made sure everyone in the country knew how strict the handgun laws are here. And if you don't know them already, holy hell find out before you go to the freaking airport with your weapon, no matter how securely you've packed it up.

With some luck he'll get a warning because of the situation, fair or unfair compared to others it's happened to. I wouldn't wish others in that precise type of situation to have the book thrown at them either.

I understand that, before he was drafted by the Jets, Quinnen had spent little, if any, time in the NY/NJ area.

Since being drafted by the Jets over 10 months ago, Quinnen has spent at least half of his time here, maybe more.

I guarantee you that, during most of that time, he illegally had his weapon with him.

That is why the authorities are going to get worked up over this.

Like I said, just say you didnt mean that and move on, don't claim I cant read.

Now move on

You're intentionally changing what I said into a blanket statement. Let me show you what I said again, then I'll juxtapose it next to what you're saying, and you'll see you are clearly playing STRAW MAN.

MY OPINION HERE: What I was saying here is most, NOT ALL, who need to have a gun in their possession 24/7 are likely cowards - the kind that hit the ground in less than 60 seconds once a fight starts. Remember the Joe McKnight shooting? Ronald Gasser was as coward who shot and killed McKnight over some stupid road rage. Take away the gun, and the coward doesn't do anything but keep his window up and drive away.

I don’t disagree, and ignorance is not a defense.

Except that sometimes it kind of is, and (mandatory minimums notwithstanding) judges make judgment calls when they size up the people — yes, for better or for worse; sometimes too lenient, sometimes not lenient enough, but they’re human. OK some of them are.

But however anyone feels pro or con about these laws, they’re presumably are there in the interest of public safety, not in the interest of making an example of a good-natured ignoramus who was being totally forthcoming about his suitcase contents. I don’t see this the same as a defense of, “Hey I didn’t know rape was illegal.” Especially something like this where the legality varies so dramatically by jurisdiction (rape is illegal everywhere outside Duke University ;)).

It’s still his responsibility to know, but I still think it sucks. Basically I’d feel bad for anyone pinched for coming forward. Yeah I’m pre-judging that no small part of the reason - on top of all the other things that seem to have made him a zero risk of being a killer when they slapped the bracelets on him - is because he seems to act like a good-natured dufus who’s always wearing an ear to ear grin & big braces-lined smile. And that has nothing to do with him being on the Jets, who picked him, or where.

Could be worse. He could be in this same situation with a house/apartment full of kids, without millions of dollars.

Here in the south, when you get a permit, you sign a FEDERAL affidavit stating you know the various limitation of state laws.  So...  he is on thin ice with the ignorance defense.  He is guilty of not wanting to pay attention to a law he most likely signed and stated he understood.

I never said he wasn’t guilty, nor a lack of understanding that law’s ideally supposed to be applied without prejudice.

I still kinda feel bad for him, as it doesn’t seem he was one saying, “F*** the law. I do what I want,” so much as being an ignoramus. I have this image of him sitting in a jail cell, crying, sitting over a puddle of his own pee, waiting for his mom to call his agent to set up a lawyer for him.

I’m admittedly guilty of prejudging here. I see affable dumbass, not wanna-be hoodlum / future murderer.

I think the facts look very similar to Da'Quan Bowers.  Bowers was originally charged with the Burress charges.  Queens DA reduced it.

So for Quinnen, all is not lost, but he is subject to the whim of the Queens DA.

Agreed, and I've said the same thing here.

One more thing I'd like to add here.

It's very possible the DA's Office, and the prosecutor here will look at this case and just like most of us, realize QW had no intention of committing a crime in NYC with this gun. What they do have to do, (and this is where I think Williams is in trouble here because of his "celebrity") is make sure they don't appear in any way to let him off easier then the average person.

This story is going to be covered in the media, and if QW is treated lightly here, what's to stop every Tom, Dick and Harry from bringing unlicensed guns into the city, then claim ignorance or no ill will, and have their lawyer cite the QW case as a precedent?

Wait a minute. So you’re giving this guy a pass for carrying a gun into an airport and relinquishing all responsibility for it because he thought he knew what he was doing but was mistaken? That just don’t fly. He’s been on numerous flights as a college and football player. He’s probably taken that gun along before and if he didn’t, you pick up a phone and ask Hi I have a gun I’d like to take to NY. I’m QW you know the guy who sucked last year,  was picked 3rd and plays for the Jets. What do I need to do to be able to bring my gun.

They aren’t cowards, but in my experience, most people who carry all the time (and there are a lot of people who constitutional carry here) do live in fear.  Most of them would freely admit that.

Correct indeed.  The argument for socialism is based on the absolute falsehood that wealth causes poverty.  Socialism is also divisive by nature.  In order to give political expression to socialism, the "revolutionaries" will insight by means of creating scapegoats .  Anyone that has a potato washing machine is an exploiter.  Workers, unite and rise up !

Melinda Katz new Queens DA born (1965), raised and lives in Forest Hills Queens. High probability she is Jets/Mets fan, hopefully bodes well for Q.

Tread lightly, Melinda. Your Jets need big jump from Q in year 2.

Actually after reading what happened yes.  Why 15 pages by all having the story wrong and jumping to conclusions is better?  Repeating the actual story is something I should be questioned about?

Better than the fantasy report about him and Alabama college games etc.  Or seeing a difference because he was the 3rd pick.

Think there would be so many dumb comments if he had a DROY type of rookie season
