And I'd say only Denzel, Leo and Brad Pitt are in the same stratosphere.

Do you think people watch movies because of the actors? My guess is no.

That makes it difficult to rank actors. I’d just group them. There are actors who get sent scripts/get recruited by movie directors and there are actors who need agents and need to send audition clips. The second group has various sub groups. Someone I know is in the movie industry and he is always sending clips to directors. It’s a difficult industry. You can even further divide the first group between A List actors etc.

Will Smith is an A List actor. I didnt know this until just now, but the Ulmer Scale tries to rank actors within the A List group. For what it’s worth (I dont know how good this scale is) this is the order as of 2009

1. Will Smith

2. Johnny Depp

3. Brad Pitt

4. Tom Hanks

5. George Clooney

6. Will Ferrell

7. Reese Witherspoon

8.  Nicolas Cage

9. Leonardo DiCaprio

10. Russell Crowe

Again not sure how accurate these lists are. Nobody went to go see King Richard. Everyone I know wants to watch a movie based on the story and not the actors. But that’s just my opinion.

I think it's a complex answer. A little of both? Like if I see Leo is in something, I will most likely watch. But the role of the movie star is dwindling, it isn't like the 50s and 60s, and what sells is mostly superhero movies and IP people are familiar with. I wish executives had your mindset, because they're worried about story if people aren't familiar with it. But I prefer original stories as well.

King Richard was a case of a good script with a movie star, and it didn't do well. But that type of movie usually doesn't do well these days.

Will is a movie star not only because of the past 5 years but because of what he's achieved up until this point. Bad Boys III did pretty well, but that is also IP. Suicide Squad (2016) sucked but it did well, but that is also IP.

So yeah, it isn't the same being a big time movie star. Doesn't matter much. I think that's a pretty good list for that time period and I think today, only Leo, Clooney, Hanks, Pitt and Smith would be on it. Witherspoon has gained a lot of fame, too and guys like Crowe and Depp have dimmed a bit. Anyway, I'm like you. It's about the story, but I always thought of Will Smith as a really famous person.

Got to imagine Will Smith is about to take a big hit though. I doubt anyone is like “hell yea Will, now I’ll watch your movies”. So, his net favorability has to be down.

There have been plenty of movies that did well because of the cast - if not because of one member of the cast - but most of those names no longer apply.

Some of the reason is the best screenplays I'll bet will go to the hottest A-list actor(s), and they can still have stinkers (particularly when it's not a high-budget action movie with a big name in it), but some can take any film & turn it into a serious hit movie.

Best A-List example of being a box office draw for an otherwise weak cast & screenplay is probably Estelle Getty in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.

But there are others who just get people to go to the theater instead of waiting months to just watch it at home:

  • Tim Curry in Oscar
  • Burt Young in the Rocky Movies
  • Richard Crenna in the Rambo movies
  • Teri Hatcher in Tango & Cash
  • Paul Winfield in Cliffhanger
  • James Woods in The Specialist
  • Nigel Hawthorne in Demolition Man
  • Mickey Rourke in The Expendables.
  • Also, to a slightly lesser extent, the volleyball in Cast Away

I'm not one of those anti-SJW losers

SJW's don't authentically care about social justice.  They are almost always people with very few if any accomplishments that look to gain power and significance that they have not earned through constructive/productive efforts.  The most common tactic would be to make specious accusations against others that are established and successful.  SJW virtue signaling is the social politics of envy along with being demonstrable hypocrisy.

Who are the real losers ???

Look many Americans and it goes for people all around the world are mad as hell. Our way of life has been stopped and over 6 million dead. We’ve seen irrational behavior and crime spikes. It’s brought out the worst at times and sometimes the best. People have lost jobs had to wait on lines for basic food been evicted etc. And if that wasn’t enough now we see a crazy war with bombing of civilians for no rational reason. So what we saw Oscar night from Will Smith might just have been an example of it. I don’t know but maybe in normal times he’d have acted rational. Because he was unhinged.

Will Smith is and has been white America’s favorite Black actor for some time. Dramatic and action roles. This moved him into a universal appeal stratosphere.

Not even sure how this is a debate.

I would think more people would choose Denzel Washington or Morgan Freeman over Will Slapth. Personally, I'm a fan of that beefcake Idris Elba.

It’s easier to be rich during a pandemic and I could be totally off ascribing his behavior to anything or for any reason. I don’t know them. Like you say they could just be terrible people. But it’s terrible times and people who normally usually act civil to each other we’ve seen losing it. Maybe Will’s actions were just a sign of the times. Because we’ve never seen an established person like him act this way and totally lose control in front of the entire world. Maybe behind the scenes but not like this.

Numbers don't lie.  During the mid 90s-2000s, Smith's films garnered about $200M box office per movie.  That dwarfs any other black actor during that era.

Denzel, Freeman, and Elba are all superior actors.  But they weren't as popular to the general public as Smith was.

Yeah, that’s just not true.

Multiple action movies and franchises + incredible dramatic roles.

Oh, and a generational tv sitcom.
