slimjasi
Ok, so I know we have a lot of guys on JN who were really high on Baker coming into that 2018 draft. Then, he had an awesome rookie season. But four years into his career, that promising first year is a distant memory and he is now dangerously close to being dumped by his second team. He got taken before we picked that year, so it's not really about the Jets, but just wondering what folks on here think of him going forward? Does he just suck now? Is he salvageable? Will Carolina bench him for Darnold when he comes off IR? Should the Panthers have just kept Teddy Bridgewater in the first place? I think it's fascinating to look back at that 2018 draft class. Allen and Lamar have really run away with the top two QB spots.

varjet
Zach Wilson currently is far behind where Baker was in his year 2. Baker had some great games, made the playoffs and provided the Browns fans with good entertainment. The Browns exercised his 5th year option and then traded him to the Panthers for partial/low recovery on this guaranteed salary and some draft picks. Let's see what the Jets do with Zach's 5th year option at the end of his year 3. I think Zach will provide the Jets fans with some entertaining football, but I am not seeing them exercise the option. FT Wilson if he is good after year 4. 1 2 8

PS17
He’s small and has zero special physical attributes. You can get away with that when on a rookie deal with a loaded roster. And then you get exposed when the team around you isn’t above average.
JoJoTownsell1
Darnold is going to wind up being the 2nd best qb of the big 4 in 2018 draft class..... (Not forgetting Lamar... he wasn't one of the guys in the discussion for the top pick) 1

Popular Post derp
Baker played on a talented offense in a defense optional conference. His accuracy was highly overrated coming out because his completion percentage was high - you couldn't really tell if he was capable of putting balls in tight windows because he didn't have to. His traits were average, but he plays like he thinks he's Josh Allen physically. That means that his hyper competitive nature which is his best trait at times is also his worst trait at times. And he just doesn't have an answer when blitzed. I posted in another thread recently - there are two kinds of quarterbacks in the NFL, guys you can win with and guys you can win because of. When a guy's on his rookie deal, you can tell if he falls into the "guys you can win with" category because you can put a pretty good team around a QB on his rookie deal. The Browns had an elite run game for him behind a great offensive line, plus some defensive talent, and a couple offensive playmakers. They won with him - but very clearly not because of him. That put him below the level of guys like Goff and Wentz who looked like they might be superstars with the loaded group that the Rams and Eagles were able to put around them - and those guys still ended up falling into the "win with" not "win because of" group. The Browns correctly realized they couldn't be a winning franchise with Baker leading the group on his second contract, and made some questionable decisions afterwards. Carolina isn't as good of a situation as Cleveland was, and we just see more of Baker's warts now. But he's pretty much the same guy he always was, just not surrounded by what he was in Cleveland. 10

JustEndTheSuffering
Even though he beat us when he first came in because of course he did (I thought Pickett would do it to us too), he was never going to be a good NFL QB. Bad attitude it seems like too.
Popular Post Beerfish
Nothing happened, he was never that good. He went to a team with an oline, weapons, defense and great running game and thus looked decent but just like Mark Sanchez the moment he was expected to take that next step and be really good he fell on his ass. He would have been Darnold bad from day one if he as saddled with the utter schlock talent and coaching Darnold had to deal with.

Sonny Werblin
when he met the random girl in the cheesecake factory parking lot for b!ow job, I was concerned that he was losing sight of his career goals and was getting caught up in celebrity. The insurance commercials only drove that point home. I had though that being thrown away by the Browns would resurrect his desire to put in the work to improve his play, but I've watched him play a couple of times and he has not grown at all as a QB. He still has the skills to be a successful NFL QB, but that requires him to put in the work on the mental side of things and he is unwilling or perhaps unable to do so.
kdels62
Dunno. He didn’t have an elite profile coming out but he had elite production which is where most good QBs from. Some defensive coaches figured him out and played deeper forcing him to throw short where his height worked against him. They forced him to play in the middle of the field and he couldn’t adjust to the tight windows.

Popular Post slats
I laughed today with the QBR discussion regarding Zach and the rest of his class. I remember @Green Ghost being a big fan of the QBR stat when his favorite young QB, Baker Mayfield, was being compared to Sam Darnold. Today, Baker is the lowest rated QB by that metric by a large margin at 15.4, lol. Fields is next at 25.9, then, of course, Flacco comes in third. A big takeaway, I think, is that Matt Rhule absolutely sucks. 4

Green Ghost
It kills me to say it, but Baker has been terrible this season. Rhule, the offense system, the OL, none of that matters only losers rely on excuses or others to explain failure. He has to be better than he’s been.
