So you are saying some LB on a team getting their ass kicked can identify a deflated football on ONE PLAY, but the officials who touch the ball on every single play could not identify a deflated football? If the league has the Patriots coach dead to rights on this, if it is able to prove beyond shadow of doubt he was the mastermind behind Deflategate, then Belichick must be benched for Super Bowl XLIX. He should not even be allowed to accompany his team to Arizona on Monday, let alone coach his players during the week or stalk the sideline on Super Bowl Sunday. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell cannot soft-shoe his way through this. There are as many scrutinizing eyes on Goodell as there are on Belichick, because Goodell’s 2014 season has been worse than that of the 2-14 Titans and Buccaneers, beginning with his egregious botching of the Ray Rice fiasco. Goodell cannot afford to drag this out, going the route of the glacial, 96-page Robert Mueller report in that mockery of a self-investigation of the Rice incident and whether or not anyone from the league saw the entire Atlantic City elevator tape. Goodell’s charge right now is to act swiftly and decisively if the league finds Belichick guilty. A $25,000 or $50,000 fine, the loss of a draft pick or two and/or a suspension next season will not do. That’s not sufficient. If Belichick is found guilty of this — which would make him a two-time convicted cheat — his team must be penalized next week. A mere slap on the wrist by Goodell, who happens to be very close to Patriots owner Robert Kraft, could — and should — doom the commissioner. There are so many potential layers to this mess. The easy target — and justifiably so — is the man wearing the hoodie and the scowl on his face: Blame it on Belichick, who is as reviled for his role in Spygate and his intentionally bland public persona as he is revered for his three Super Bowl titles and remarkable perennial success. But what about Patriots quarterback Tom Brady? The more difficult target than Belichick in this is Brady, the beloved poster-boy quarterback with the supermodel wife and the million-dollar dimples — the face of the league. To suggest Brady was not aware the footballs he was throwing against the Colts’ defense in the driving rain were not underinflated is utterly naive and impossible to believe. Professional athletes in every sport are so keenly in tune with the equipment they use most of us have a difficult time comprehending it. Professional golfers, for example, can tell you what the compression is inside the ball they’re hitting or the thickness of the ball’s cover. They can tell you, within millimeters, what the loft is on their irons. Baseball pitchers can handle a baseball for seconds and tell you if there is something askew with the stitches on the ball. It doesn’t take more than one wrist shot by an NHL player to know whether or not the curve on his stick is the way he wants it or one jump shot by an NBA player to know whether the basket is higher or lower than 10 feet. If you believe it’s a bit aggressive to accuse Brady of having a part in ordering the Patriots equipment staff to take air out of those footballs after they were inspected by the head linesman before the game, that’s fine. But that possibility cannot be completely dismissed. Brady, on his weekly radio spot with WEEI in Boston the day after the Patriots AFC Championship victory over the Colts, called the “Deflategate’’ report “ridiculous’’ and laughed out loud while he said: “I think I’ve heard it all at this point. That’s the last of my worries. I don’t even respond to stuff like this.” Wonder how hard Brady is laughing now that this has become a topic that is dominating the sports world. Wonder how much Brady and Belichick will be laughing during a week’s worth of Super Bowl press conferences while they’re being peppered incessantly with questions about those underinflated footballs. As for Goodell, can you imagine how contentious and uncomfortable his annual state-of-the-NFL press conference on Friday of Super Bowl week will be if he has not handled “Deflategate’’ in a decisive manner? We are waiting to learn whether NFL commissioner Roger Goodell — a Robert Kraft frat brother — will punish Belichick and/or the Patriots before the Super Bowl. The Patriots can win another championship Feb. 1 in Glendale, Ariz. Belichick can join Chuck Noll as the only coaches with four Lombardi Trophies, and Tom Brady can join Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw as the only quarterbacks with four rings. But the most important thing — the Patriot legacy — is lost. The Patriots and their fans will never win the “best ever” argument. Everything is tainted. Footballs (reportedly) have been doctored, headlines have been written, and opinions have been formed. Locally, the Patriots are revered. Nationally, they are loathed and branded as cheaters, and once again they have handed the hammer to their legion of enemies. We still don’t know where “Deflategate” lands. The NFL has yet to disclose its findings and announce penalties (if any) against the Patriots. But the ballgame that matters is over. And the Patriots have lost. At this hour, even if the Patriots are cleared of wrongdoing, they are the modern-day sports equivalent of Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of Labor, Ray Donovan, who asked, “Where do I go to get my reputation back?’’ after he was declared not guilty in a corruption case. There doesn’t seem to be much dispute that footballs used by the Patriots in Sunday’s AFC Championship were doctored. By somebody. The 12 footballs used by the Patriots were inspected by referees 2 hours and 15 minutes before the game and deemed within league standards. At halftime, the balls were inspected again, and 11 of 12 were found to be below the league limit of inflation. This has been widely reported (starting with ESPN) and not disputed. If this is not true, the Patriots need to come forward to tell the world. We all know the Patriots did not win Sunday’s game because they deflated the footballs to Tom Brady’s satisfaction. The Patriots could beat the Colts in a game played with Wiffle Balls, bowling balls, or medicine balls. The Patriots are a very good football team, possibly a Super Bowl championship team. But were they breaking the rules? Again? Was this another case of Belichick seeing a rule he doesn’t like, going rogue, and making his own rules? Was this another example of the Patriots doing every little thing — even an illegal thing — to gain a competitive advantage? The fanboy narrative is that “everybody does it.’’ You’re not trying if you’re not cheating. Folks are just jealous of the Patriots’ success. Swell. But if you are a Patriots fan, you cannot be satisfied with this explanation. If you walk into your local 7-Eleven and see the back page of the New York Post screaming, “CHEATERS,’’ you cannot make it all go away by claiming jealousy. Granted, it didn’t matter in Sunday’s game. But what about all the other games? If the Patriots are cheating, are they not cheating systematically? Like Spygate, it’s not a one-game anecdote. Did deflating footballs ever give the Patriots an illegal advantage in any of their close games? Did it help them win the division 11 times in 12 years? We know they don’t like to play on the road. In the playoffs. Ever. This great Patriot dynasty has not won a road playoff game in seven years. Forget about the Colts game. Did a deflated ball make the playing field uneven in any games this year? Did it result in a home-field advantage that they would not have otherwise owned? How does the legion of Patriot toadies defend this? Belichick has already said he did not know anything about the deflated balls until he was told about them Monday. Could this possibly be true? The next 48 hours will be interesting. By any measure, this is a colossal embarrassment for Kraft. He loves the journey and the Klieg lights, but now his franchise has been tainted again. It matters greatly to the Patriots’ image-obsessed owner. Kraft spent September sucking up to Goodell in the commissioner’s time of need. Now we’ll see what the commissioner does when the Patriots allegedly break the rules on the eve of the league’s showcase event. Sunday in Foxborough was a great day. 56mehl56 Posted January 22, 2015 Share Posted January 22, 2015 Fighting is dead but headhunting is still alive and well. The instigator rule eliminates teams from protecting their top guys. That said, the skill level and speed is light years beyond 2003/04 season. JMO. I do miss the fighting, it does serve a purpose, and not just the staged fights between the heavies. But to me the inconsistencies with the interference/holding/slashing calls almost rivals basketball with the charge/block fiasco, much too ticky tack. They've eliminated almost all stick on stick checking. But I know why they did it and to some extent it saved the game , I just find it emphasizes too much on finesse while eliminating the snarl that's been a backbone of hockey. Yes we all concede that the Colts were not beating Pats last weekend and that this "tactic" was not needed but.... Does anyone, anyone on the planet believe that if the Pats deflated the balls this weekend that this was the first time they did such a thing? Wasn't the game against the Ravens close enough where a couple of non-fumbles by the Pats or a couple more completions to Pats receivers could absolutely have been the difference in that game? "Cold temperature will make a difference, it will lower the pressure," said BC physics professor Michael J. Naughton. "Today a report came out with, unfortunately, an insufficient amount useful information," Naughton said. "If 11 of 12 footballs were deflated by two pounds, that is totally within the realm of the numbers that you would get in the equation. Weather will certainly deflate the footballs by a pound or two - but it all depends on the details." So explain how the weather differed between the Colts and Pats sidelines since their balls had no deflation issues , or do the Patriots even control that ?? Serious response here, I had always wondered why Cindy played so well in bad weather games, how he roasted Peyton all those yrs, how he torched the bears in a blizzard, I was left wondering...maybe he is that good!! Well it is very clear to me, Cindy Lou has been doing this for yrs, he has already admitted he likes an under inflated ball. I hope this bars his entry into HOF. I agree with Dan Shaughnessy: regardless of what the outcome is, the court of public opinion has already formed it's anti Pasts* agenda. People will never acknowledge the pats ever won a superbowl without cheating. If they win next Sunday, it might say they won on paper, tied legendary marks by players & coaches but any argument will always have an asterisk by their names. They'll make a full court press with the likes of Rooney and former players to say it wasn't a big deal...they'll throw some harmless penalty and say it's over... and the one thing they know for sure - it will not effect the popularity of the game....Will you stop watching? Will I? Until it actually begins to affect the money they will continue to do whatever they want... Heck, even the Ray Rice investigation was a joke - everyone knew it and knows it but no one's talking about it anymore...Put out a fake commission and essentially just kicked it down the road long enough that people stopped caring.
