NFL insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Jets are expected to host free agent quarterback Josh McCown.

Without an established veteran on the roster, a player of McCown’s stature makes perfect sense for the Jets, who currently have only Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg under contract.  Neither of the two are likely to be ready to start in 2017.

A veteran of 14 pro seasons, McCown has battled injuries while playing with the Cardinals, Lions, Raiders, Panthers, Bears, Bucs and Browns. In that time, he has thrown 79 TD’s to 69 interceptions.

I don't think McCown will sign here, but I wouldn't hate it. Same thought with the Mychal Rivera and one-year Claiborne signing. If nothing else, it might convince them not to reach at these positions in the draft.

The only other suitor appears to be Dallas and they dont seem to have any idea what to do with Romo. The longer that lingers, cold feet my come into play.

How sad is it after all these years we are discussing the QB situation and Josh McCown is the player.

good backup for petty or hack.  almost a guaranteed loss if he has to come in. :P

In all honesty I'd sign him.  If Hack shows any kind of a pulse in camp, he'd  start week one.  I'd give him a few weeks to see if he improves, or starts to self destruct..  If he even just "holds his own" I leave him as the starter, just to get him the reps.  If he starts to self destruct, I bring Petty in week 3.  Normally I would have started the season with Petty, but he had surgery on his non-throwing shoulder and probably won't be able to throw in OTA's.  He'll be behind.

This is Petty's third year.  His 4 game debut last season was far from overwhelming.   He did flash at times.  There were "excuses" for his poor play.    Before the Jets turn the page on him, I'd like to see him get a good look.  Hack will still have 18 to impress.  This is it for Petty

Same rules apply to Petty as Hack.  If he shows anything, he stays.  If he sucks badly Mc Cown gets the honor to lead the Jets to another 4-12 season

McCown is the right guy for us.  We need to play Petty and/or Hack this year and McCown will bring experience and support to the QB room. We drafted two young QB's and now they need to play.

Yeah except even if he's signed as the back up you know that cocksucker is gonna be good to come in out of nowhere and win 3 or 4 games. He's the ultimate, come off the bench and out of nowhere win 3 or 4 games but when he actually becomes your starter will sh*t the bed, QB. I will sh*t if he's on this team. Hack, Petty and like, sign Matt Hasselbeck as your 3rd Qb to mentor. ******* No to McCown

behold mccown.  seems like more of a hard luck guy than a complete slug. he was good enough during the past 4 seasons to win way more than he did.  at the very least it wasn't his fault the bucs, browns and bears su**ed. maybe he needs to get on a team with a different letter.  at his age he just about right to get hack into the starting role and keep him there. i still can't get the picture of him being a helicopter in the jets/browns game in 2015 out of my head.

totally good with this. imo petty showed enough to show he could be a back up.  maybe it's unfair that the team overall was having problems but he just didn't do himself any favors.  they should go with hack (or whoever they draft) and then sign a guy like mccown to be back up.

McCown is the kind of guy you pick up if you already have your starter, already consider yourself a contender under that starter, and want an experienced backup capable of QBing a handful of games, to keep you in the hunt if the starter is out for a week or a month.

For a team like us there is no point to this signing. Bowles will go with the veteran and waste another half-season or more of 1st team reps on a dead-end QB who won't make us a contender anyway.

If they're not going to draft a QB, rather than McCown (or similar) I'd rather the 3rd QB was an UDFA rookie. If I knew today that under no circumstances will he be the opening day starter, even if he's initially the best of the three, then I could warm up to it.

Reminds of that hit in that Jet-Fins game.

McCown won't sign here. At this stage of his career he may want to play for a winner. It could happen though.  He has played for every other loser team in the NFL why not make it all?

If Hack fails to impress enough this year to dress on game days or even get any playing time, why would he still have 2018 to impress? How many years should a player get before you cut bait? New England has no problem cutting high draft picks when they've seen enough. I understand Hack is a project, but I'm not sure why he gets all of the leash he's being given by some here.

He's a mentor type QB and IMO, the best 1 on the market . He starts only if the Kiddy core doesn't give the staff a reason to start them . It's going to have to be a really good reason. This guy knows his job, but he won't accept it without a proper compensation . The Vet minimum is not proper compensation for what he provides .
