And, I think he'll be a solid veteran voice for both Sam Darnold and a developing James Morgan (rookie). We probably can't count on Flacco to win a game with his arm should he need to step in for Darnold at some point, but I'd count on him to not lose one with stupid mistakes. The best thing that might come from this signing is having James Morgan learn from Flacco and be a competent QB2 the following year. To me, all of the above is worth $4.5M for one season. Darnold > Flacco > Morgan should be the QB Depth Chart. 7

JoJoTownsell1
Given the possible quarantine of players during a season it isn't a terrible idea to have a vet backup at QB. Flacco is not good anymore (don't think he was any good) but as a backup, you aren't going to get much better. He can step in for 3/4 games and not completely kill you which is just about all you can ever ask from your backup QB.

Something like 13% of the time. People are making too big of a deal over it. And you can't keep paying veteran QB's to back up Darnold when he gets his $30 million extension. 6 1
PS17
Has anyone else had the career trajectory of Flacco? First round pick, moderately skilled, won consistently with a very good team around him, eventually a Super Bowl. And then just average at best and in rapid decline after the first contract. 3

Flacco really went into the tank (coasted, perhaps?) after his big payday after the SB win.

Thanks to Douglas (and Gase) we are starting to have an nfl caliber roster again. Problem is, will Gase turn it loose on offense and score points? Gase is the Jets weakest link now, not any of the players.

Not a big fan of the Morgan pick. What's done is done. I'm a little curious about the coincidence that Morgan has a lot of the same attributes as Flacco. It's like they have a "type" for back up QB.
Popular Post KRL
Nothing not to like about the move. Flacco has a ton of experience, won a SB and played in a lot of playoff games. He'll be a good mentor to Darnold and a QB who can actually win a game if called on. Douglas has done a good job on "paper" of spreading his resources around the whole team to make it better 6

Paying him significant money would just be opening the casino vault to a team of bank robbers, and put the Jets in the financial ER. No thanks. 2

"Yea well JD should have drafted Jim Brown 2.0 who was just sitting there for us to take!" I keep asking, who was the superstar that JD passed over in the 4th round, cause you are not running schemes or anything so how do you know who that "guy" is or was? They don't want to build a REAL team when you can have FF picks and just sit back and win! Slight tangent........................... this is the real difference between JD who knows the NYJ are not winning it all this year because of their ongoing lack of talent and say an Idzik who thought that the Jets had "more than enough" talent to win when they stunk! JD as one poster said in this thread is playing chess and is planting long term seeds for the Jets success and not listening to the decades old band aid approach of attempting to fill immediate holes and the difference is night and day for those willing to pay attention! 4

Warfish
I'm indifferent honestly. I absolutely loathe the endless recycling of worn out defunct old long-past-prime veteran QB's and the risk aversion of NFL Coaches and GM's to actually draft, develop and have faith in young QB's. Do I think Joe Flacco circa 2020 is particularly reliable or good? Nope. He's another 1-3 record type fill in, same as guys like McCown and Fitz and all the endless assortment of recycled old guys we've had before. On the other side, he's cheap, and if we had available cap space, nothing is really lost except opportunity for younger guys. If Darnold misses time for a third year in a row, I guess we're watching the Flacco show. Doesn't excite me. Doesn't bother me really either. Anyway it's moot, folks say there is no way Darnold will miss time again, so moot is moot. Still more interested to see Morgan play in preseason than Flacco. 3
Popular Post mrcoops
Weird that folks are still so critical of drafting a developmental QB with a 4th round pick. Smart teams do stuff like that all the time. We also drafted a 3rd string RB and a developmental OL in that same round, but no-one seems to be questioning that. Flacco is here for 1 year - to backup Darnold and to help groom Morgan as next year's #2. I like the Flacco signing - he's a seasoned vet with big-game experience, and he came very cheap. Jets might have to carry Fales early in the season though, if Flacco isn't going to be healthy to start the year - unless they are comfortable with Morgan as the #2 in the early going.

Popular Post fltflo
Just a side note on Morgan, I’m a Canes fan and I watch that kid take apart the Hurricanes defense and made them look like a joke. Just so you know Morgan could have a huge upside, can’t say for sure, the Pros are a huge step up. Yet, I can tell you he has a great arm and from what I saw, very smart with the ball. So that was no wasted 4 round pick, he could be a hell of a backup in a year or two. He could even turn out to be a great trade candidate down the road and a starter sometime in the future. So not a wasted pick but a very smart gamble on Douglas part. Sent from my iPhone using JetNation.com mobile app 9 2

Absolutely not in agreement there. I wouldn't have signed a vet QB, but it doesn't negate the upside that drafting a QB can have. At any given time there's only about 12 or so guys on the planet that can play the QB position at a high level. Supply and demand suggests it can be worth a swing in the mid rounds from time to time in the hopes that you find someone like Kirk Cousins. If Morgan shows anything at all, he could easily get flipped a few years from now for as much as a 1st rounder. Plus rumor has it the Patriots were all set to take Morgan in the 5th round. If true that makes the pick even better. Not to mention, we still ended up grabbing a talented player in Bryce Hall in the 5th. That was a guy a lot of people here wanted in the 4th round anyways. 3
