With Mike LaFleur coming in as the offensive coordinator, you can expect the Jets to work plenty of outside zone into their offense. Teams like the San Francisco 49ers have prioritized speed at the running back position in similar offenses, hunting big plays in the run game on the edge. It makes sense that the Jets would do the same.

There is no better back in this draft class in that mold than Etienne. He broke 217 tackles as a runner across the last four seasons — averaging over 4.5 yards after contact per rushing attempt — and he has rare burst and big-play ability at the position. While Najee Harris looks like he’ll be the first running back off the board come April, Etienne is the top back on PFF’s Big Board.

The interesting name here is Keanu Neal, who has experience with new defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich from his time in Atlanta and was teammates with Maye at Florida.

Neal earned an 81.8 PFF grade when lined up in box or slot alignments for the Falcons in 2020, his first full season following several major injuries. That’s the kind of player this defense could use, and given the connections Neal has, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Jets had interest.

Yup. Saw a blurb about him the other day. Intriguing connection.

NFL Draft 2021: Could Jets’ Joe Douglas trade down and still pick Sam Darnold’s replacement?

Well, here’s a new one.

Most projections for the 2021 NFL Draft that involve the Jetstrading out of the No. 2 pick also include them retaining quarterback Sam Darnold — and giving him one more chance.

But not the latest mock draft from CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco. He has the Jets trading down, in a deal with the Panthers, who pick BYU quarterback Zach Wilson at No. 2.

Here’s the rationale:

The Panthers make a bold move here to go up and get a quarterback. The Jets will stockpile picks and stick with Sam Darnold in this scenario.

But wait. There’s more.

Prisco, at No. 8, has the Jets picking Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. And here’s why:

They trade down, add extra picks, and still end up with a quarterback. That would be a wise move for Joe Douglas.

OK, but why in the world would Douglas also keep Darnold, in this scenario? Might as well trade him, entering the final year of his rookie contract, and get something for him. If Douglas is drafting a quarterback eighth overall, his current quarterback (Darnold) obviously isn’t in his long-term plans. Right?

Keep an eye on Washington as a possible trade destination for Darnold. The Bears could be an option, too. Washington picks 19th this year, and the Bears pick 20th. That’s probably too low for either quarterback-needy team to trade up and address the position in the draft.

That’s the price for going 7-9 and 8-8 and losing in the wild-card round of the playoffs, as Washington and the Bears did last season. The Jets, of course, are in better control of their draft situation, as they seek a competent quarterback. That’s what happens when you go 2-14.

I’ve been an advocate of this plan for a while.  Get extra picks for #2 AND get trade value for Sam AND still draft a new QB.  Best of all worlds, if picks 3-7 fall the right way.  If not, hold onto Sam and consider trading down from #8 again.

My unpopular opinion thinks Javonte Williams maybe the first or second RB selected. He seems just as good and has less wear then the two Senior RB. Plus he has the most broke tackles in the country.

I would tattoo Douglas’s bald, fat head on my chest if that happens

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix did not play last season; the Cowboys released him prior to Week 1. But the former first-round pick has drawn some interest this offseason.

The Raiders are hosting the veteran safety, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. This comes shortly after they hosted cornerback A.J. Bouye, who left Las Vegas without a contract agreement.

I love Etienne but doubt he will be breaking tackles in the league.  Not his game.  He is an elusive breakaway type like LeSean McCoy.  Harris is the guy who will break tackles and chip away at a defense.  I prefer Etienne but Harris is the smashmouth bellcow two down back in this year's draft.  Etienne is a three down guy who can do it all.

Either would instantly improve the club.  Personally, I want to stick with our backs and improve the wideouts and offensive line.  All three can play in this league (Adams, Perine and Johnson).
