Jets linebacker Avery Williamson is out for the season with a torn ACL, The Post’s Brian Costello confirmed on Friday.

Williamson walked off the field after a second-quarter collision with Falcons cornerback Tevaughn Campbell during Thursday’s preseason matchup in Atlanta. An MRI exam revealed the devastating injury on Friday morning.

The 27-year-old signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract in the offseason, and was expected to be the starting inside linebacker alongside free-agent signing CJ Mosley.

Personally I feel bad for Williamson, to go through a whole off-season to
be knocked out in a pre-season game stinks.  But ILB is probably our
strongest position so:

Cashman
Hewitt
Wint
Burgess

get a chance to start.  This would've been a disaster if we didn't get Mosley
and Lee was still here calling the defense

The Jets will run a 4-3 defense for sure now IMO.  Copeland rush OLB, Jenkins cover OLB, no idea who the DE’s will be.

I hope you're right about the Jets switching to a 4-3. Q seems like a better fit as a DT, rather than a NT.

As far as the DE's, you have H. Anderson on one side and maybe Copeland on the other?

The Jets just suffered their first catastrophic injury of the season.

Linebacker Avery Williamson tore his ACL during Thursday night’s game against the Falcons, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Williamson is now done for the season.

That means the Jets will be without one of their two starting middle linebackers for the entire year. C.J. Mosley just lost his partner in the middle of the defense.

Here are three thoughts on the injury, what it means and how it affects the Jets’ defense moving forward:

1. Why was Williamson still playing?

Williamson picked up the injury when he collided with cornerback Tevaughn Campbell with 3:44 left in the second quarter. All the Jets’ starters had long since been removed from the game, but Williamson was still in there. Now, the Jets are going to pay for that gamble throughout 2019.

Head coach Adam Gase was asked about the curious – and clearly all-too-risky – decision to keep Williamson on the field after the game, but hemmed and hawed, saying that some players have a certain schedule of reps and need to play in certain packages. Well, the Jets should have had fewer reps on Williamson’s calendar. There was absolutely no reason to expose him to extra risk, especially given the Jets’ relative lack of depth at linebacker.

2. Major defensive strength eliminated

As we just mentioned, the Jets aren’t exactly stacked at inside linebacker. But their top two – Mosley and Williamson – were going to be one of the major strengths of this defense, alongside their safety tandem of Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye. Now, one of those backbone tenets is off the board. That could have a big ripple effect throughout the rest of the unit. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams already had to game plan to paper over his massive holes at cornerback. Now, he may be trying to mask two weaknesses. Is that feasible?

3. Neville Hewitt, Blake Cashman or both?

Hewitt and Cashman are probably the two most likely replacements for Williamson. Cashman, a fifth-round rookie, has been playing some with the first team all summer long, but obviously has no experience. Hewitt filled in at inside linebacker some last season, due to injuries, and has also shined this training camp, working mostly with the second team. He’s done a nice job flocking to the ball and consistently popping up to make plays. But the more useful path may be for the Jets to use both players in a platoon. Neither guy is really well suited to be a full-time starter at this point, but perhaps they can ham-and-egg it together by utilizing each player in differing situations, in order to best utilize their strengths. Cashman is probably the better cover guy, while Hewitt can get after the run. Cashman is sidelined with a hamstring injury right now, though. So the inside linebacker spot is looking mighty thin all of a sudden.

I dont blame preseason playing time.  Injuries happen.  This could have happened in practice or 16 games this year.

Dont go into a shell and not play guys now.  You carry on as you were.

And Avery was really our 5th option at LB, anyway.

Leonard - Quinnen - McClendon - Anderson

I would think at least one of the Williams' can play End.

This is why we don't get our news from Twitter, people.

Kaufusi seems the most natural, after Anderson.
