Jackson just signed a 4 year $58 million extension with the Bears.  $14.6 yearly average and $33 guaranteed

Elite cover safety with a 10 career picks and 2 sacks. Was a steak as a 4th round pick after breaking his tibia at Bama.

This is likely what Adams contract would be modeled on.

Adams made plays against the Giants and Cowboys that lead to victories.  He is the most talented player on the team and should be signed to an extension.

Huh? His new deal should be very similar to this. They were both picked in the same draft and up until recently was considered better than Jamal. Imagine if Macidiot waited to Pick Eddie Jackson in the 4th instead of reaching for Marcus Maye in the 2nd? Wow.

Similar yes but it will definitely eclipse it

That makes him the highest paid safety. 33 mil guaranteed. Adams deal will easily eclipse this.

It's 4 year extension but in reality since he's under contract next year his remaining contract is  5 yrs $60 million with $34 million guaranteed.

Adams is almost 2 full years younger than Jackson. He's easily going to get more AAV than Jackson - especially since he made 1st team AP this year

For Jamal who has a really cheap 2020 season ahead of him would you suggest tearing up the existing deal and paying him more next year or would you do something like extend him for 4-5 years, pay a big bonus in 2020 (roster, etc.) but still keep his salary at that low 2020 amount?

The leverage over Jamal is kinda 3-fold.  The Jets control him for 2 more years.  He will be dramatically underpaid in 2020, he will still continue to be slightly underpaid in 2021 when the Jets exercise his 5th year option.  They will then have the option to Franchise Tag him in 2022 (his 6th NFL season) that because of how it's computed (average of the Top 5 Safety salaries....not including his own value) he'd still probably be underpaid and he'd also have no long-term security.

The Jets have a very valuable chip in Jamal Adams that they should either cash (not my preference) for a significant haul (multiple picks, 1st and 2nd rounders, etc.) or if they plan to retain him get the deal done now while there is leverage.  If Joe D is smart and wants to extend him I'd probably use the approach of an extension and not tearing up the current deal.  Keep his 2020 salary where it is and give Jamal the big upfront payday that lets you keep his Cap cost manageable through the next 5 years.  I'm nowhere near an expert on this stuff but that's kind of the approach that makes sense to me.

The harsh reality is Jamal is not worth 15 mil a year. Not a slight against him, but no Safety is worth that. A lockdown corner maybe is. Jets luck they give him 16 mil a year and he tears his acl, then they have to eat it. Thats Jet reality too.

Whats that like 8 more INT's than Adams?  Sweet then he deserves less.

Not bad for the best safety in his draft class.
