Darnold will get multiple chances to prove himself b/c he was (once) considered to be a very good prospect. If he’s drafted in the 4th round his name is Bryce petty and he’s out of the nfl next season. Exactly this. It's like the sunk cost fallacy, but worse. Another team trying to capitalize on a lost cause because of the cost used to get him.

Biggs
Miami was thrilled to get Rosen for a 2 in the year they traded for him. Matt Rhule gave Teddy a huge payday. He’s still the best QB on Carolinas roster. Sam will be facing Tampa and NO defense twice next year. There will be ghosts.

Biggs
The cost to Carolina is pretty low. They can recoup both picks they lost next year with a small trade back this year in rounds 2 and 4. Basically they got Darnold for pretty much nothing from their side. We got a fresh start and apparently love one of the top 4 QB's. We will reset our rookie QB wage scale and we're still at least a year away from fielding a good team. It's pretty clear we didn't want the option on Darnold. Overall it's a nice wash deal. We reset they take the risk on the 5th year option. Darnold gets a chance to start for a bad team with a good OC and unproven HC in a very tough division. They gave TB a ton of money and TB actually had a plus 69% completion percentage and a decent QBR. Darnold is going to have to make a lot of big plays at a lower completion percentage in order to justify the option and the starting job. This is all about moving forward and resetting. The draft capital gives us flexibility to make a move for a player we like. If we get the QB right it's a great deal for us. If we don't who cares. I would still consider a trade back and try to get Mills in the 3rd.

Hot takes now are silly. If JD winds up drafting 4th round picks, like he did with Morgan, that are irrelevant, he won’t be a gm for long. That is the part of the draft where great gms flourish...

You will never see Morgan as a starter for the Jets. It was and will be a wasted 4th rd pick. 2

Yeah, until James Morgan is throwing TDs in the fourth quarter of preseason games, then people here will be calling for him to start ahead of Wilson. 2 1

isired
Is there anything from that article that you couldn't have figured out yourself? Darnold going to more talented offense. Good for him. No kidding. Bridgewater now out of a job.. Bad for him. No kidding. Watson has one less place to go.. Bad for him. No kidding Jets need to be right with Wilson. No kidding. It's a pretty kevel-headed take that is nowhere near the rip of the Jets that the OP makes it out to be. According to Battista, great move for Panthers. This seems to be a wide held opinion. Sam Darnold trade: Who are the winners and losers? (nfl.com)Nowhere does she say it's a "great" move for the Panthers. Her praise of the move is riddled with 'ifs' regarding Darnold's play - and she calls it "on paper, an incremental upgrade for the Panthers". I think her assessment is accurate, they gave up little if he remains a viable starter or becomes a FQB, but your translation of it is not.One thing I agree with 100%, Darnold is the biggest winner - moving into a starting role with more talent on offense and (apparently) the intention to pick up his option.

varjet
2 hours ago, Larz said: When you factor in the 5th year option I don’t know how you say the panthers won. It all about the 3rd cheap year, which is when Mahomes went to the SB and Allen led the Bills to the playoffs. The Panthers basically bought Darnold for a 2 year rookie contract-2 years/$23mm. The Jets paid 3 years/$35mm. So if the Panthers treat Darnold like a rookie, which he basically is, they have him locked up for 2 years, plus franchise, with a $23mm commitment for two years. The question is whether that was a good investment. The Panthers already invested $20mm in Teddy. They will have a hard time getting rid of that. I don't see the Jets assuming that contract. Alex Smith would be a disaster. The Jets are actually screwed if Wilson has to play. He will not make it 16 games.

Sammybighead
This is where Kiper lives in his own vacuum of draft grades. Sam darnold, the unknown QB from 2018, would have gone third. You can’t just put his draft grade against this class and ignore the past 3 years of production.
