OL Tom Compton signs with Jets

His yearly PFF grades (with the usual public service announcement that PFF isn't the be-all and end-all):

2013: 62.1

2014: 53.1

2015: 60.6

2016: 53.3

2017: 45.7

He's just a body. It underscores the need for the Jets to trade down and draft at least two offensive linemen in the first three rounds.

I hope the Jets didn't give this stud much guaranteed money.

Versatile 29 year old lineman with 29 starts- perfect guy to have, he’ll end up playing at some point and we’ll be glad to have him

If they do sign Wisniewski on a good deal and draft one in the 3rd round thats a pretty good offseason for the line. Adding a pro bowler, a couple versatile lineman for depth, and hopefully a good prospect

61 -> 53 -> 46 is not a great trajectory, regardless of the imperfections of the evaluation method.

His PFF for last season 60.6. Yep he fits right in with our existing lineman.

Nix, that's not exactly fair.  There was major upheaval in Minnesota last year, especially on offense.  Tony Sparano,  the offensive line coach died in July.  After that two, assistant coaches were moved from other positions to become co-offensive line coaches.  We should know how those "shared responsibility" things work out.  He was injured in mid season, missing two games.  The center was ranked dead last in the league. The starting right guard was also ranked very poorly. The offensive coordinator, John DeFilippo was fired in December.  You and I both know how important continuity and cohesion are for an offensive line.

Tom Compton is a big, 6'6", 315 pound depth signing.  He is fast, athletic and has enjoyed good health during his career.  He plays several positions and has started and been a sub in this league for six plus seasons in the league.  He is experienced and makes sense for the Jets.  He is an upgrade from Ijalana and Qvale, that is for sure.  And that is why he was signed.  More to come.

Your right - my bad! Last years 60.6 pff grade was an improvement over his past 2 seasons and thru all that upheaval that happened mainly because Minnesota signed Cousins which I didn’t consider he could actually be a good signing. Really.

75 - Destiny Vaeao 6'4" 299 Washington State (DL)  (RESTRICTED FA?)    (Some Debate About His Status on Roster)

His last name is "Vaeao"?  That has to be a Jets' record for consecutive vowels in a last name.  Not even Nuu Faaola can compete with that!

Jets sign an OL!  Most likely guard depth only...not C.

https://www.ganggreennation.com/2019/3/18/18271861/tom-compton-signed-by-the-jets

Compton is a veteran journeyman. He has been in the league since 2012, and the Jets will be his fifth team. He spent 2018 with Minnesota, starting 14 games at guard.

I would imagine he projects as the primary backup at both guard spots. Compton doesn’t really solve the issues the Jets have in the starting lineup, but he does profile as a functional depth piece for the Jets. Over the last few years, the Jets’ cast of backups comprising of the Ijalana’s, Qvale’s, Harrison’s, and Dozier’s of the world has been subpar at best and unplayable at worst. This is at least an experienced guy who has some track record of credible play. Even if you don’t want him starting for 16 games, he is better than a lot of the backups teams are running out there in today’s NFL.
