• Herm Edwards (too many BBQs)
• Eric Mangini (too tight, too much "process")
• Rex Ryan (too loose, too much bragging)

Mangini never should have been fired.

The two people though flawed but who actually had a real plan in Mangini and Idzik get fired after a couple of seasons.  The awful horrible coaches and gms who from day one look like garbage all get 5 years.

The difference is that the idiot GMs and dumb coaches we’ve had here knew to suck up to the fanbase and throw Manish a bone every so often to keep the public pressure low.

Mangini.  He was a good coach, who even made Tanny look decent by influencing his drafts and FA signings.

Yes, he annoyed the players but he was a good football coach and he had a plan. He was given a very rough deal being fired after not wanting Favre, then being fired for Favre's arm falling off.

Idzik found fewer good players with 12 picks than anyone else did with 7 picks.

Herm was the flim flam BBQ man. He inherited a great team, threw everyone under the bus when things didn't go swimmingly, then cratered the talent from the Parcells era teams leading to a total overhaul. I've always thought he was better suited to college, where he could be a preacher to young men, recruit well, and teach them life lessons in an environment where schemes were less complicated and there was less pressure (going 8-4 at Arizona State might get him an extension.)

Rex had things he was great at (defensive scheming and player motivation) but but was a mess as a CEO, had a horrendous impact on our player evaluation, and was generally a joke who clearly could not steer the ship long term. He had a memorable impact in 2009-2010 but was never the guy. His personality and mentality is just not what you want in a professional football coach.

Bowles was a great D Coordinator and a bad Head Coach. He wasn't a CEO, couldn't manage the game, and while his players respected him there were times when they quit on him too. Talent evaluation during his tenure was also dreadful.

Mangini -- look, the guy was flawed too. He had a huge ego and was a huge control freak. He rubbed certain guys the wrong way, and he's out of the league now, so it's not like there's a big sample size of him killing it elsewhere. That said:

1) He's the smartest guy on this list by a substantial margin.

2) As a CEO/HC he did the little things. Our teams were disciplined under Mangini, we had good special teams, we rarely looked totally unprepared. He ran a tight ship and understood how to be the type of CEO/manager most good head coaches are.

3) The talent evaluation when he was were was very good. I give him the lions share of the credit because Mangini/Tannenbaum did a great job with talent while Rex/Tannenbaum were awful. Under Mangini we drafted Brick, Mangold, Brad Smith, Leon Washington, Darrelle Revis, David Harris, Dustin Keller. We acquired Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Calvin Pace, and Kris Jenkins. Guys like Cotchery and Kerry Rhodes emerged and became stars under his watch. Simply put, those 2009-2010 teams were built on his watch.

The short answer -- they were all bad, but Mangini is unquestionably the guy most likely to have had long term success if given a long leash. He was likely fired too quickly because Woody had PSLs to sell and wanted playoffs in 2008 at all costs.

That ‘06 team had a completely broken down Pennington at QB, Kevan Barlow and Cedric Houston in the backfield, an OL consisting of guys like Adrien Clarke and Anthony Clement, Andre Dyson as our #1 CB, Dewayne Robertson at NT, etc...and they managed to beat the Pats in Foxboro and go 10-6 en route to the playoffs.

We also had two of our best drafts in team history during the first two years of his tenure.

For the fun of this, I would be leaps and bounds happier to have mangini or rex right now compared to this straight up mess we have with Gase. (and yes poor drafting is a HUGE part, but gase hasn't even showed a semblance of doing anything correct as the HC)

Whats also funny is that I genuinely thought Todd Bowles was rock bottom. I was convinced there was NO WAY it could get any worse. No possible way. Hilarious

If it's 2009 I'd still go Rex because he was the right coach for that roster at that time in 2009 and 2010. 

 

Otherwise I am a vote for Mangini out of that list. Not a great HC by any stretch but he at least knew how to get the GM to put together a good roster. Mangini was not some genius at scouting or roster management. He was proficient (admittedly with some clunkers) at assessing players and knew how to convince the front office to follow a functional plan. A good roster can bail out some not so good coaching and would at least get the team pointed back towards competitiveness. At a minimum Mangini would be good for two or three years to build the roster and make the team a better destination for somebody who is equally as proficient at roster input but better at coaching.

Even though he wasn’t listed Walt Michaels by far. He rebuilt the disaster that was the Lou Holtz Charlie Winner era made them competitive in 2 years had a brutal 1980 season but the next year had a legitimate Super Bowl contender ( Same can be said for Parcells as well)

I really believe if Hess didn't fire Michaels after the 1983 season, the Jets would have gone to a Super Bowl or two. Those teams were stacked.
