  • New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has been in London for the last couple of years, serving as the United States Ambassador to the U.K.

The U.S. and U.K. generally have a very warm relationship, a “special relationship,” as Winston Churchill coined it.

But there are rules and protocols when dealing with the Royal Family, and certain decorum that should be followed at solemn events.

Johnson didn’t get that memo.

Cellphone, speech don’t mix

On Wednesday, Johnson was with President Trump and other American and foreign dignitaries in Portsmouth, England, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Seated two rows behind Trump and in full view of cameras, Johnson picks up his phone while Queen Elizabeth is giving a speech about the heroism of those who lost their lives that day and fiddles with it. Was he filming the Queen? Was he checking Twitter?

We can’t be sure, but either way it’s not a good look.

Certainly not a Johnson fan but to be fair is it the least bit possible he took the phone out just to silence it? Is there any vid? **After seeing vid looks like he and the other schmo were recording.

And for a certain west coast poster who salivates at the chance to inject veiled political statements your time would be better spent feeding the uncountable homeless in your state.

Let's look at the Big Picture here:

  • Woody and Chris are the grandchildren of founder of one of the world's premier corporations.
  • The company eventually went public, and his father ran the J&J almost into the ground.  The shareholders separated ownership and management, and Johnson family mostly cashed out.
  • Woody and Chris have never been involved in the company, and to our knowledge never really accomplished anything on their own.
  • The Johnson family have actually been the poster children of rich, spoiled entitled people, and Woody's children were featured in the movie "Born Rich" that does not get as much attention from this Board as it should.
  • We now understand that Woody, Chris and Mom each own a 1/3 of the Jets, which makes sense.  My guess is that Mom voted for Woody to run the team.  He is not the real "owner."  With Woody overseas, Mom then appointed Chris to run the team.  Who knows what happens when Woody gets back or when Mom passes away.
  • But, unlike people like Stephen Ross or Stan Kroenke who were successful on their own, or the Maras, Rooneys or Halas' who run their teams as a family business, there really is no reason or evidence that the Johnsons would be able to run a football team successfully.  Past successes were really luck.   I can't think of another team in the same position.  It is actually a mystery why the NFL allowed Hess to sell the team to the Johnsons.

He probably just forgot to turn it off? Woody is not going to embarrass Trump in public like that. It's probably just an innocent mistake.
