Browns get their HC, Vikings former OC, Kevin Stefanski

It's not always as easy as just looking at results from a coordinators unit and forecasting future success as a Head Coach, but I don't think this is a good hire.

As many weapons as the Vikings have their offense is just ok.  Not saying that's all on Stefanski, but he seems to have had a bit of a meteoric rise the last few years and I'm not sure why exactly.

It doesn't matter who the browns hire. they will be fired in 2 years regardless

Extremely difficult for this guy to ever succeed.  Organization is dysfunctional.  Until the management /ownership improves, no coach is winning there, regardless of player talent.  Best of luck to a first time head coach walking into that locker room full of team first personalities.

Reminds me of when Brian Billick got his shot, after he led that Viking O in 98.

Was he a good OC, or was it just he had Randy Moss, Chris Carter, Robert Smith, a rejuvenated Randall Cunningham, and a solid O Line.   Sure, he won a SB on Baltimore, but they won in spite of that offense.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is again interviewing to become coach of the Cleveland Browns, his third go-around with the team he grew up watching as a kid.

McDaniels was a candidate for Cleveland's job in 2009 when it went to Eric Mangini and again in 2014, when he pulled himself from consideration.

very interesting. Didn’t know this

Just to play devil's advocate here, Zimmer has always been a coach that's beloved by the players. If you're going to bring in a guy to corral that locker room, bringing in someone that's at least studied under a guy like that could be a good idea. Browns already have the talent for sure, they need more of a Gordon Bombay type.

CLEVELAND — Kevin Stefanski will likely be the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns, according to ESPN and NFL.com. Stefanski,37, is currently the offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings.

Stefanski was one of the finalists for last year's vacant head coaching position. He interviewed twice with the franchise before Freddie Kitchens was awarded the job. Stefanski was the only candidate to be interviewed last year and this year, the Browns said.

Spending most of his career with the Vikings, Stefanski has been in the NFL for 14 years. He worked under three head coaches in Minnesota and was the longest tenured coach on the Vikings' staff.

In 2018, Stefanski was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. During his first year guiding Minnesota's offense, the Vikings were eighth in the NFL in scoring offense and sixth in rushing offense.

Freddie Kitchens, Stefanski's predecessor, was fired on Dec. 29, 2019. He led the Browns to a disappointing 6-10 season, during which star quarterback Baker Mayfield seemed to regress. General Manager John Dorsey was then fired on Dec. 31, 2019.

The Browns still have not hired a general manager.

Sources: The #Browns are planning to hire #Vikings OC Kevin Stefanski as their new head coach. Runner-up last year, winner this year.

Just 1 year of OC work, but a respectable year. He was the longest tenured coach on the Vikings, having worked under 3 different HC's in Minnesota, being retained every time. I like that he's been with one team for years and showed to be successful with every position given. It's clear that he's a sound coach and is well respected if HC's are fired and multiple times the new coach wants to keep him on the staff.

With that said, the only thing that I can say is that his offensive scheme produced an NFL leading rusher, put Cousins in the best position to succeed using heavy play-action. Both of these things benefit the Browns offense as Chubb was a few yards off of actually leading the league in rushing, and Baker Mayfield this year completed just 59% of his passes, but completed 67% of his passes this season while throwing out of play action.

Kirk Cousins was also 7th in yards per pass attempt with 8.1. Teams like the Titans and 49ers both use this heavy play action concept and Ryan Tannehill is 1st in that category and Jimmy G is 3rd.

Also Cousins, Jimmy G and Tannehill complete 70% of their passes from this type of offense, which is right up in Mayfield's alley given that under Freddie Kitchens he completed 67% of his passes while in play action.

Cousins, Tannehill and Jimmy also have a low amount of INT's, with Jimmy G throwing the most with 13. Mayfield threw the overwhelming majority of his INT's when not in play action, many on those predictable Slant routes, which by the way Mayfield led the league in throwing to the slant route, given that slants were the answer for everything with kitchens.

If Stefanski brings his offense and can establish some discipline, get some tackles and average that 25+ points per game that he did with the Vikes which was top 10 in the league...this could end up being a very good hire and be just the 2nd good hire by Haslam.

Stefanski was also top 10 in redzone attempts per game, and scoring. Cleveland, at mimimum, is bringing in an offense that seems to be beneficial when it comes to making Chubb/Hunt the feature of the offense with Mayfield taking high-percentage passes.

This could work
