On Wednesday, the possibility of a trade came up in a conversation between the two sides, sources said, but there are conflicting accounts on how serious those talks were.

Well it’s business time for Jamal. Unfortunately Jamal the team picked up your fifth year option. So they kinda got the control. So his fifth year is not a bad deal. I just don’t know why the JD would want to trade him at this point. He is competitive when on the field and that’s his nature. So it’s wait and see time for the Jet Nation and adds to the already speculative topics to start a thread. Let’s just hope the season can include fans in the stadiums.

I think it's obvious what's going on with the Adams situation. Not only does Adams think he is the best safety in the league, (he's got a good argument for that) he thinks he's one of the  elite players in the league.  I'm sure he's demanding to be paid as an elite player. 

Another issue is the uncertainty of the coming cap situation.  A GM would really be rolling the dice with his job to be handing out a major top contract right now when he has control of the player for a few years.  I'll be really surprised if there is a deal.  

IMO the Jets  will/should just sit on it for at lease another year.  If it's true that "half the league"  is interested , if some one is willing to give up a stupid deal, go for it.

Don't think anything is gong to happen except the Prez will be hitting Twitter.

Are you sure that's true? I tried digging into this and couldn't find anything. The only thing I found was that a player would lose a year towards Free Agency (you need 3 full seasons to become a FA). Since Jamal has already played 3 seasons I don't think it matters.

Would be great for us but Jamal would likely fail a physical before preventing himself from missing out on FA. He'd claim his helmet doesn't fit and that would be the work around.

Even if its Lawyer Milloy, the situations are still vastly different. Milloy was saying and doing the right things and was rewarded with a contract by the very man that had input in drafting him.

There are also still about 10 players Belicheck traded in their primes and subsequently flipped for future Pro Bowlers. 

Oh and not to mention this gem just two seasons later, when it dawned on Belicheck that he overpaid him, soooo...

But he never did it when he still had complete control of the player for three more years  because of his contract status. Beli made these trades with a year on the horizon....Adams is still on his rookie contract and per CBA, this is the first year he is even allowed to look for a new contract.

He was going into his final year of his contract and Bill could have picked up the option on him also, and then franchised him twice. So the exact same scenario.

It's not the exact same scenario and it's not even close. You're trying to compare a player that hypothetically got franchise tagged twice versus Jamal Adams who already had his option picked up and is under team control. If we are using your standards for this hypothetical event we can control Adams for next FOUR years.

Of course that doesn't mean we're not going to have about 20 more Adams threads in the next few months.  Fans get upset with Adams' tweeting, yet he hasn't said one bad word about the Jets. One tweet by a writer or some online "insider" starts the whole cycle up again and again.

Interesting that we're on page 3 talking about this. We've seen what Myers and Cimini think is happening, so once again everyone is upset with our best player. Adams and the GM haven't said a word though, except the usual "he's the type you build around", ""I want to be here my entire career" and they "both want to get a deal done" stuff.

Jets own his butt for the next 3 years. According to NY Post's Costello writes Adams could be fined $40,000 a day if he holds out. Plus it's very rare for 1st round picks to receive a contract extension after their 3rd year. Adams has some set of balls to think he deserves huge dollars now when he has no leverage. Plus he plays a non-premium position. The best thing he could do would be to shut up and play his butt off in 2020 and make a case for a new deal.

Even with all Adams has accomplished, it would be unusual for him to get an extension before his fourth season. Just 15 of the 191 first-round picks from 2011-16 received contract extensions after their third season and just four of those were defensive players. Rams star Aaron Donald had to wait for a new deal until after his fourth season.

The Panthers did give Christian McCaffrey an extension this offseason. McCaffrey was taken two picks after Adams in 2017. But other stars from the 2017 draft, like Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, have not received extensions yet.

The next step in the contract drama figures to come if there is a training camp. Adams can stay away but can be fined $40,000 a day for doing so.

Yup. Two years under contract and one under the franchise tag.

Also, we've seen the Joe D isn't in the habit of giving things away or overpaying for players.  To me, this means two things....

1. The Jets trade him for fair (or better than fair) value only.  Joe D likes to buy $1 bills for 80 cents....not the other way around.

2. The Jets sign him to a fair deal, which still likely means $15M per year but not some earth-shattering deal that Jamal is likely asking for right now.

Also, leaders don't hold out with two years left on a deal.  So I'm ready to watch Jamal lead this team until his situation is resolved, whether that's in 2022 or earlier.

How is it not close? Bill traded Collins midway through his 4th season, we are discussing trading Jamal midway through his 4th season. 5th year option or not, I think you're caught up in the minutia of the contracts and missing the larger point...

Prime players traded for future capital before you have to pay them on their big contract. 

Collins got traded, Cleveland overpaid him. His play went down. Bill got a 3rd, used it to get Brandin Cooks, saved 55 million, and then even got the dude back. 

If we traded Jamal, got a pick or two, flipped either for a Pro Bowler, and saved 50 million to distribute more wisely, then got Jamal back 3 years later because the team that overpaid him realizes it destroyed their cap, I'm positive you would sign up for it.

I'm 100% not arguing against trading a player like Adams but you're trying to argue apples and oranges. One guy gets traded for peanuts while Beli never picked up his option, versus a guy who is an all pro safety in only his third year.

I understand both points of view and if I was forced too make a move, I would ship him away. If he can net us a first and a second I'd ship him off and I love Jamal the player. I normally don't post in these threads for good reason...time to bail out.

I’ve been told that Right Guards are firmly entrenched at RG, Right Tackles are only RT’s, and by that logic, Free Safeties are solely FS’s.
