Jets to Pay Over $24 Million in Dead Money To 6 Players

FWIW, this information isn't all that useful without a comparison to other teams.

It's a trip down Macc was really bad memory lane, but dead money wise, is it really even that much?

The article actually says it was 7th worst, so certainly not good, but far from all-time bad either.  Dead money this year is also likely a bit of an outlier for many teams though, considering there was far more going on than normal last year due to the reduced cap.

I believe the Eagles have 48 million this year. This is the end of the dead money for the Jets unless they choose to cut someone next off season.

Ah - I quick scrolled just looking for numbers.  Seventh was spelled out.

As you say, bad but not all-time.  We're in fine shape.

DEAD MONEY DOES NOT GET PAID TO PLAYERS.*

It is an accounting fiction.

It's money that was ALREADY paid to players, in the form of a signing bonus, that wasn't counted against the cap when paid and is now hitting the cap because the player was cut or traded.

*Dead money that is from a cut player's guaranteed salary is actually paid to players, but unless I'm mistaken none of the Jets 24M in dead money is from guaranteed salary

Signing bonuses are paid up front, but the cost of such is divided equally (cap wise) among each year of the deal. If a player is cut or traded the cap hit is accelerated from upcoming years to that year or the following one depending on when cut (it's why june 1st was always a big day as if cut after the hit was spread out between the current and next year). There are other bonuses that become dead money and linger each year until run out regardless of if the player is on the team.

Yes, I was simplifying. The point is, dead money is at money that the team has to pay out to the player in the cash that year, again unless we're talking about guaranteed salary for a player who was cut

This feels like the peak for this dead money problem. JD really had to make many of these unpleasant moves and incur the cap hit. This team is now getting younger, roster construction is based on draft picks, and Mosley seems to be the only guy with a truly bad contract at this point. Even new, expensive veterans like Davis and Lawson have relatively decent contracts.

100 percent... and I do not think davis or lawson contracts are bad team wise at all. They are actually really good considering the talent -

Joe doesnt seem to do bad contracts - he knows that ultimately the only way a bad contract is made is through him and he wont do it. It is just not worth it. Look at the rooks and contracts they are getting - he wont budge on off set language etc. it a great feeling to knwo we are offering fair contracts.

I also dont think we are going to run into problem wiht dead money in the future either...Joe doesnt seem the guy to give so much garunteed out to players that never played a snap for us. Love his direction.

Take flight!!

I believe the dead money against the cap is in fact NOT money being paid to players this year. Isn't it the cap hit due to losing the proration of bonus money over the length of the contract because the player is no longer on the team?

Dead money is inevitable in the NFL.

Teams will dump players on bad deals before their contracts are up to stop the bleeding of cash, but they still have to pay out the rest of the guaranteed money from those poor decisions. The Jets have had to do that a lot recently and will shell out $24.3 million to players no longer on the team in 2021, according to Over the Cap.

That’s the seventh-highest total in the NFL. The figure includes one of the biggest free agent blunders in recent memory: cornerback Trumaine Johnson. Joe Douglas cut Johnson before the 2020 season just two years into a five-year, $72.5 million contract that included $34 million guaranteed.

Johnson is just one of six former players who will earn a paycheck from the Jets despite not suiting up for Gang Green. Some, like Johnson, were released earl. Others were traded away.

Douglas has done well to reduce the Jets’ dead cap hits during his tenure as general manager. Although $24.3 million is a lot of money, it’s still $20 million less than the $44.3 million the Jets paid in dead money in 2020 and slightly less than the $27.6 million in dead money Douglas inherited when he joined the team in 2019. As of this writing, the Jets don’t have any dead money on the books for 2022 – but that could easily change as the season progresses.

For now, here are the six former players who will count against the Jets’ salary cap in 2021.

CB Trumaine Johnson (free agent) – $8 million

QB Sam Darnold (Panthers) – $5 million

Macc gave an oft-injured WR heavy injury guarantees in his deal.  Come on man.  Just about everyone here knew that deal was going to end in disaster the moment it was signed.

Ermmm....

Don't care a hoot about actual dollars passing between the Johnsons and whichever player is on that list but the accounting cap charge is the ONLY number that matters here.

Those are 2021/2022 dollars that count against our cap this year and dollars which can therefore not be used to improve the team elsewhere.  Because they are "dead" it means the Jets are receiving no on-the-field benefit as a result of those "spends".  A bit like starting a 400 meter race $24M behind most of the other teams.  Or at least some of the other teams.

Per overthecap.com, only 5 teams are dealing with more dead cap than the Jets this year, but keep in mind that all 5 of them were dealing with dead cap from QB contracts (for QB's not on their rookie deals), unlike the Jets.

You'll also notice a lot of the top teams that are on the top half of the list are dealing with dead cap from quality players, several of whom retired.  Not so with the Jets.  All the players handing us dead cap were just sh*tty/injury prone players given ill-advised contracts.

As mentioned in the OP's article, the dead money for the Jets was even higher in 2020 ($44.3M), but I don't have the 2020 rankings available.  I'm fairly certain, however, that we were at least in the top 5 that year, if not top 3.  Spotrac.com's has some numbers that are different than what the article states, but we can roughly assume that the Jets, Panthers and Jaguars were likely the 3 worst offenders in that category in 2020, in some order.

Macc f**king sucked.

Quick let's spend the empty cap space we do have irresponsibly on inflated contracts for JAGs because it will make some of the fans happy in the moment. Like ice cream and a fat person.  No chance there will be any regrets soon after in either scenario. Those same people will want to repeat the same cycle the following year and rag on those of us actually paying attention. "Who cares about the cap? It's the owner's money"...

This is spot on.  I will never understand the "Pay _________ whatever he wants" crowd.  They have no understanding of the negative impact that has on the Jets ability to field a competitive winning team.  Every fan should want their team to underpay its players.  The  way you win in a salary capped league is when your players outperform their contracts more than the other teams. That's it in a nutshell.  It's why having successful QBs on a rookie deal for as long as possible is such a big deal.

Yeah, Mosley still has another $8M guaranteed next year. Hopefully he makes it look like he’s worth that this year.

Macc sucked so bad he passed on both Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes because he thought Christian Hackenberg was the future.

Even with that, I still think Pac sucks more at mafia than Macc sucked at drafting.

I didn't do a close examination of it but I might (yes, it's an exciting home life I lead). Crazy how New Orleans got under the cap. Weren't they over $100MM over with a crazy amount of it in past-paid bonus $ that can't go away by cutting/trading players? Presumably they cleared a huge chunk of it by putting it off for later (meaning they'd still have some cap issues next year, too); I mean there couldn't have been enough room to cut-cut-cut to have all that 'dead cap' space hit this year and still field a team.

Enunwa got hurt but I think he had a lot of talent and potential - don't really blame anyone for that
We got our money's worth out of Anderson even with the extra 1.3 million.
Osemele was horrible, but these things happen so it might have been worth a shot
JD cut his losses with Darnold pretty effectively - could have been a lot worse
Bell and Johnson were horrible signings from Day 1

Enuwa after signing that contract had 1 catch for negative 4 yards. Macc should never have signed an injury prone guy to that deal.

One of the worst free agent signings in any sport in history, but JD has a clearly different philosophy to avoid situations like Trumaine Johnson.

You simply do not give someone their "Last contract".  The minue Trumaine Johnson signed his name to that paper he had zero motivation, other then whatever internal drive to win that he had, to perform as he knew he wasnt getting another contract after the Jets.  You cannot do that.

JD has shown with players like Davis and Lawson that he is willing to pay, but that he keeps the contracts short which is a great way to motivate the players and avoid complete disasters like Trumaine

I could find 50 worst signings.  This is a SOJ fans take.
