Denzel Mims Shipped to Detroit for Conditional Day 3 Draft Pick

There was trade interest from other teams ... more than one, by the sounds of it. That interest wouldn't last beyond the start of camp as you want the guy to show up at your training camp day 1, so you get maximum value.

Plus, Mims could be an issue in camp (unhappy last year and asked for a trade at the time). And if he got injured then they still cut him, get nothing in return, and likely owe him more money.

He wasn't making it here - we already have Wilson, Davis, Lazard, Cobb, Hardman PLUS a whole bunch of #6 potential guys who would likely see the field more than Mims, especially if they play ST.

Plus one more reason.  Trading players early in camp gives them the best chance of sticking.  Other players see this, potentially that we may be interested in signing and get that JD wants to give his players the best chance of continuing their careers.  Players do notice and JD has done this before

I'm hearing it's a conditional 2nd.....

j/k

You are correct!!  It is a conditional 2nd round draft pick of 2045.  All Denzel has to do is catch 500 passes this year, and be unanimously voted offensive player of the year of the NFL.  Then the Jets would get that 2nd round pick.  But if he only catches 499 passes, then the Jets don't get anything!  Good call!

Yeah, everyone knows a pick not good enough to stick on your team for more than a year or two is actually a good thing.

In the past when we got rid of someone they were out of the league. Now teams are fighting for them. Oh how times have changed

Looking at the wide receiver room:

and some want/wanted Davis gone. I think the jets should’ve added another proven guy at this position

One of my very few complaints of the offseason.

Cobb is old and washed, but he is still an NFL receiver.  His numbers were not significantly worse than Moore's.  In fact, he may have been the issue with Mims since they both play fairly limited special teams snaps.  At least Cobb has some value as a return man.

Still time!  Remember, nearly 1,200 players are getting cut by teams on Aug 29.  Some of those will definitely be useful WRs.

And if no one of interest pops loose, current dirt cheap street FA's to kick the tires on include:

  • Jarvis Landry
  • Julio Jones
  • Kenny Golladay
  • T.Y. Hilton
  • Sammy Watkins
  • Quintez Cephus

If you think Davis is the #4 WR, I think you're going to be quite surprised come the regular season.

Hard to have a breakout as the WR5, and the team would need its WR5 to be able to contribute on specials until his time to shine comes along.  Mims doesn’t.

Wasn’t worth keeping him around.  As was announced prior he was going to be a goner for sure via trade or cut.  Glad we at least got something back.

Poor @Paradis.  🥲

I agree and was totally kidding. If he hasn't broke out yet then he never will imo. There's some kind of fatal flaw in his attitude and view of life/philosophy that holds him back in the NFL and odds are it is likely to remain that way.

Landry would be the nicest of p/u’s

Watkins actually started for GB in the opener last year.  That is post-Hackett, but Rodgers has familiarity and he had a 93 yard game.  Team was fairly horrible in games he played.  He was on IR with a hamstring injury and didn't come back strong, so they cut him cause they had no more exemptions and needed th roster spot for a RB.  Baltimore picked him back up immediately.

On second thought Rodgers presumably didn't go to bat for him and that probably means their association is a negative.

Really really liked Mims coming out, had him in my top 5 of that class and was shocked after all the trade backs that he was still there for the taking late in the 2nd.  I thought his rookie season was promising for missing most of camp and coming on late.  Call it a run of bad luck, a regime not invested in him or whatever you want, it's a huge disappointment but glad the Jets got something vs. nothing.  That said, not a great look for JD to be trading both 2nd round WR from back to back draft when they were supposed to be part of the "core" but I also respect cutting bait and not holding out for hope just because of draft positioning.  All that to say, I wish Mims well, should be interesting to see if he can revitalize his career in another environment.

I think the bad salmon did him in!

JD got something?  Wow.

As for Mims?  He went from buried on the depth chart to… buried on the depth chart.

Yeah .... upgrading a 7th Round Pick to a 6th Round Pick.

That's like upgrading your seat on a Commuter Airline Puddle Jumper.

Way to go Joe

Not even JD can overcome our 2nd round WR curse.  And the fact that our jinxes continue doesn't bode well for our game against the Eagles this year.  And the fact that if we do somehow make it to the Super Bowl, I'm thinking there's a great chance Philly will be there.  Though imagine if our first win against the Eagles in franchise history was in the Super Bowl?!  That would really be the capper!

Breece Hall will end the curse

WTF? Why trade him for basically nothing two drafts away - what a joke - they could have benched him and hoped for a team in need or just outright released him. I don't get it.

He would have to make the roster in the first place to get benched & that wasn’t likely to happen again. If he had any value on specials maybe he’d have had a better chance, but he’s been an emergency WR6 who’d shown basically nothing for two seasons running.

So his value wasn’t getting any higher with the Jets this summer, and this is/was his last contract year anyway.

They get more by trading him than releasing him, and his release was imminent anyway. Something is more than nothing.

a shaping a 7th for a 6th 2 years from now is nothing; and for nothing they could have used him for camp fodder - maybe with injuries his value goes up. And, quite frankly swapping a 7th for a 6th delayed two years is basically nothing - and its conditional - that and a 6 pack doesn't even get you drunk.

A release gets us almost as much if they needed the slot.
