The NY Post Actually Had an Interesting Piece Today...Okudah Dropping?

So, I decided to make a poll, because, of course I did......

If Ohio State Cornerback Jeff Okudah drops to 11 and your 4th OT, your 1st WR, and Okudah are
all on the board when the Jets pick, who would you draft?

best player at a position of critical need. Not an easy decision, but I'd take him.

Pick him - easy decision. OT and WR are greater needs, but CB is also a big need and Okudah is a tremendous talent.

If Okudah falls it is because 3-4 QBs went before him. If Okudah is there that means likely all 4 OTs are gone, and Jeudy or Lamb, If Okudah falls it is possible that both Simmons and Okudah are there.  We could trade down at higher than draft chart value,

I disagree for three reasons.

CB is a premium position , we have a big need and this guy is actually good.

Yes Okudah is a great talent and a position of need I can't deny that, but Sam sorely needs weapons and Jeudy is a can't miss.

I can't possibly fathom Okudah dropping to 11. He's as squeaky clean as a prospect comes because he tested off the charts and his film is unreal. Dude is a natural at the CB position and would be an instant impact player for whoever drafts him.

That being said we have to pick a player from the offensive side of the ball......no more defense.

Premium position guy who is an immense talent. Take him. The gap between him and a CB you get in round 2 is bigger than the gap any other position except maybe EDGE.

and then ask yourself if you want to take another defensive player in the first round

I would hope that if consensus Top 5 talent like Okudah drops to #11 that would some teams picking in the teens to aggressively try to trade up.  A team like the Cowboys who just lost the best FA Cornerback in the league might salivate over a guy they didn't think they had a chance to get.   Cowboys send LT Tyron Smith, their 2nd round pick (#51) and a 2021 5th rounder to move up to #11 from #17.   The Jets will have immediately solved LT and will take the best WR at #17 (likely someone like Justin Jefferson or Denzel Mims, possibly Ruggs if he drops).  That would be a complete Homerun for the Jets.  Leaving Round 1 with a LT (Smith) and WR (Jefferson) and then STILL having two picks in the 2nd round.

Lets see, Take the #1 CB (by alot), a position we have a huge hole in, a position that is not that deep top end for this draft.

or

Take the 4th or 6th best tackle (due to scheme fit)

or

A WR in a super deep wr draft.

People mistake take no Defense with take a D position that is premium, as in CB or pass rusher.

We are taking a CB in this draft, maybe more than one.

I'll take Okudah and the best Wr with our 2nd 3rd rounder than wr and then a CB with that pick.

The only reason I would consider Okudah is because he's an elite prospect at a premium position and that position is also an extreme need.

That said, JDs day two better be very strong if that were the road he went down.

Okudah is a Top 5 prospect overall (maybe even Top 3).

Normally I would agree with you but we have neglected the offense forever. As currently constructed we have a decent defense, but we also have the lowest ranked offense in the NFL with a QB that we need to make a long term decision looming close.

Gotta go offense.

I also think this discussion is moot because he won't be available when our pick rolls around. I love Okudah but I'm sure there will be an offensive player that I like just as much and possibly even more.

I get the concept of a big drop off at CB, but you are still essentially saying that you value taking the best CB over the best WR when we have a much greater need at WR.

We need both and WR is super deep.  Cb is not.

If Okudah drops on draft day, I would be concerned about why.  Given the value of an elite shutdown corner in today's game, if he makes it to 11, there has to be a reason.  Maybe he is not seen by NFL GMs as the elite prospect we think he is.

I would want to either trade back (if he is that good a prospect, someone should want to come get him), or take the WR-OT.  It is time to make major investment in offense on draft day.

And that begs the question, why are 10 other teams passing on him and why hasn't another team jumped into the 8/9/10 spot to take him?

No way Okudah drops to #11 unless he's seriously injured or has just beat up his pregnant girl friend and only the Jets don't have this information. Gettleman takes the LB Simmons because he thinks he smarter than everybody else and imagines Simmons will turn out to be LT in his prime.

The top three QB's all go early and DT's Brown and/or Kinlaw will go before #11. Some team will draft or trade up for one of the top WR's. That leaves the Jets with the 2nd or 3rd pick of LT's.

Revis was considered a stud CB coming out of Pitt, everyone knew the Jets would take him he was available and he fell to us at 14 that year.  Happens, depends on who's looking for what ahead of us.

Plus I never judge a player by teams who passed and possibly made a huge mistake.

Taking Okudah is not the same as taking a SS or 5 technique because they dropped...

I'm hellbent on taking a tackle in the first, but we've got to take Okudah if he fell to 11.

I feel we need to help out Darnold, if not him then the QB that'll replace him in two seasons. So if we draft Okudah, although he's not my type of guy, Cook has to be in play. Crazy Antonio Brown anyone? Then let's not forget with our limited draft picks one of our biggest needs is OLB.

I'll take any offensive lineman over Okudah. And I like Okudah alot. Sam still needs a reliable LT....people seem to keep forgetting that.
