(L.G. PATTERSON/AP) Former Jets running back and returner Joe McKnight was reportedly shot and killed in a New Orleans suburb on Thursday afternoon. The shooting, which was reported at 3 p.m., occurred after an argument at an intersection in Terrytown, La., the Jefferson Parish Sherriff’s Office told The Times-Picayune. A witness told the newspaper she observed one man yelling at another at the intersection. One man, McKnight, was “trying to apologize," as the man yelling then shot him multiple times. The shooter then “stood over” the victim and said “I told you don’t f--k with me” before firing another shot, according to the witness. The Jets drafted McKnight, 28, in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft out of USC. He spent three years with the Jets before being cut in training camp in 2013. During training camp that year, McKnight failed a conditioning test and was arrested in New Jersey for outstanding traffic violations. McKnight played two games for the Chiefs in 2014 and has been out of the NFL since then. CrazyCarl40
Seems like he was still trying to live his dream. It sucks. http://leaderpost.com/sports/football/cfl/saskatchewan-roughriders/mcknight-aiming-to-make-a-name-for-himself-with-riders OTTAWA — Joe McKnight knows all about the pressure of high expectations. In 2007, McKnight was the top-ranked running back in the United States coming out of John Curtis Christian High School in River Ridge, La. He even earned comparisons to Louisiana products Marshall Faulk and Reggie Bush, both of whom would go on to star in the NFL. The pressure of those lofty comparisons increased when McKnight decided to attend Bush’s alma mater, the University of Southern California. Fast forward to 2016 and the 28-year-old McKnight finds himself trying to make a name in the CFL with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He is expected to make his first start with the Riders at tailback on Saturday when they play the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field. McKnight understands the importance of making a positive first impression, having felt the expectations from the moment he first suited up for the USC Trojans. “I remember in my first year of college (Reggie Bush) was my name and they didn’t even know my real name,’’ McKnight said Thursday before the Riders boarded buses for the trip to Toronto. “There are some things that I had to deal with and some pressure that I had to go through. That only makes great character.’’ The New York Jets were impressed enough by McKnight that they selected him in the fourth round (112th overall) of the 2010 NFL draft. McKnight spent three seasons with the Jets as a kick returner, a running back and even a defensive back. McKnight’s highlights with the Jets were two long kickoff returns for touchdowns. In 2011, he returned a kickoff for a team-record 107 yards and in 2012 returned another kickoff for a 100-yard touchdown. He was also named an All-Pro returner in 2011. “I had a pretty decent career, but I underachieved,’’ McKnight said. “I believe that I was supposed to do more because the expectations of people were really high. The returns were pretty cool, but I should have done more. People notice me for it and I will take it.’’ McKnight, who was out of football for the 2013 season, returned to the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014. After recording two touchdown receptions over two games, he tore an Achilles tendon and was sidelined for the remainder of the season. Chris Jones, the Riders’ head coach and general manager, added McKnight’s name to the Edmonton Eskimos’ negotiation list when he was Edmonton’s head coach. McKnight signed with the Eskimos during the off-season and he dressed for four games in 2016. His time with the Eskimos was marred by two fumbles on punt returns in Edmonton’s 39-36 overtime win over the Riders on July 8. McKnight was placed on the practice roster before being released on Aug. 10. He was once again out of football until being signed to the Riders’ practice roster on Sept. 26. He’s expected to start against the Argonauts because regular Curtis Steele is nursing an undisclosed injury. “I feel that I have something to prove because my last game was so bad,’’ said McKnight, who is 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds. “You’re only as good as your last appearance. My last one didn’t go well and Coach Jones gave me another opportunity to change that. I’m going to take advantage of my opportunities.’’ Jones is willing to overlook the fumbles because of what McKnight brings to the team. The fact that the Riders have already been eliminated from the CFL playoff chase means Jones can use the remaining four games to assess players like McKnight. “He’s a dynamic talent who has played in the NFL and in college with USC,’’ Jones said. “’I’ve tracked his career for a long time. He has good size and a short learning curve because he learned our offence rather quickly. We feel he has what it takes to be a good running back in this league.’’ A chance is all that McKnight is looking for from the Riders in 2016. “Down in the States, people still know me,’’ McKnight said. “Up here, I’m just trying to make a name for myself. I’m here and I’m not even worrying about the NFL. I’m a CFLer now.’’
