Patriots admit to accidental wrongdoing amid video taping investigation

The New England Patriots admitted to inadvertently violating league rules by video taping the field from the press box during the Browns-Bengals game in Cincinnati on Sunday in Week 14. The team released a statement on Monday to explain how the accident happened.

While working on a project for Patriots.com, New England’s content team was at the game documenting the work of an advanced scout, who was in Cleveland to watch the Bengals, the Patriots’ upcoming opponent. The Patriots.com team has released a documentary series, titled “Do Your Job,” to show the behind-the-scenes work from staffers like the scouts, the training staff and the dietitians. While documenting that scout’s day in Cleveland, the film crew accidentally broke the NFL’s rules on filming the sideline.

“In addition to filming the scout, the production crew – without specific knowledge of League rules – inappropriately filmed the field from the press box,” the Patriots said in the statement. “The sole purpose of the filming was to provide an illustration of an advance scout at work on the road. There was no intention of using the footage for any other purpose. We understand and acknowledge that our video crew, which included independent contractors who shot the video, unknowingly violated a league policy by filming the field and sideline from the press box. When questioned, the crew immediately turned over all footage to the league and cooperated fully.

“The production crew is independent of our football operation. While aware that one of the scouts was being profiled for a “Do Your Job” episode, our football staff had no other involvement whatsoever in the planning, filming or creative decisions made during the production of these features.

“We accept full responsibility for the actions of our production crew at the Browns-Bengals game.”

In a statement, Patriots admit their production crew "inappropriately filmed the field from the press box. The sole purpose of the filming was to provide an illustration of an advance scout on the road." It was footage for New England's "Do Your Job" series on the Pats' website pic.twitter.com/f65pSsjp4S

If the Patriots were telling the truth, which we know they’re not, how did the idea of doing any kind of film documentary in other team stadiums the week before they play said team get past everyone in that facility?? Like, not one friggin guy in the room said “ummm hey this might not be a good look given our reputation!!??”. Or are they really that arrogant?

Gotta hand it to Belichick here.  While the country has become numb, the struggling Patriots try to get a quick edge by filming a 1-12 the week before they go to Foxboro.  It's next level stuff.

It’s compulsive at this point. Pats do 50 shady things every game, each gives like a 0.2% advantage but add them all together and it’s real. Whatever we know about is the tip of the iceberg.

Pretty sad if you have to cheat against the Bengals

Wish we had!

Are the Patriots cheating again?

Is it a day that ends with a Y?

B-b-b-but yourteamcheats.com says Pats cheat less than the league average and Jets are like the top cheaters in the league.

The guy said he was a Robert Kraft employee. This is a lawyered up denial. Independent Contractor = Kraft employee wearing multiple hats.

Bingo. “Independent contractor” as in his payslip says “Kraft” and not “Patriots.”

See above. They are engaged in a myriad of skulldrudgery at any given time. They have made the (correct) assumption that most will not be detected. They are willing to absorb the punishment when they get nabbed once in awhile.

One of the first things you do when you are taking film, or gathering any content, is to get permission from the owner of the locale that you are gathering the content from. Any high school AV nerd knows this.

If the NFL looks the other way on this one well, really. Of course they will, because they are afraid to admit that there is systematic cheating by some clubs, and do not want the public to feel the product is tarnished.

I liked this enough to QFT.

I'm curious how the Chiefs equipment got sidetracked from going to Boston this past week.

Yeah loved how reporters were all joking about it as a phony (but not really) conspiracy theory. Any other team and nothing like that would ever come up

True. I knew a guy in college who was a kleptomaniac. He even proudly called himself Captain Klepto. He just couldn't help himself, so he claimed.

I remember one time he came into our dorm room with a fistfull of car antennas (this was the mid 80's) and a big smile on his face. Combining kleptomania and vandalism into one neat package.
