Merged Becton Injury Thread

Recommended Posts

Synopsis of the last 3 weeks

Becton is fat,  lazy and won't be ready for TC, he can't be counted on to play this year.

Becton is ready for TC but he's getting beat all the time, he shouldn't have been so fast and lazy

Becton is out and our season is over... JD is an idiot for not doing something about it.

Revis were major components of that team but if I had to replace one of them with just a competent starter,

It's a different game now - Revis would be flagged every play with his style of play. New rules that favor the offense and scoring TD's is what the NFL wants. This emphasis on illegal contact will reduce man coverage and devalue a true shutdown CB.

If you get it wrong 10 times in a row it doesn't mean you should stop trying. Passing on a FLT when one is available is not the way I want my GM to build the team. JD needed to admit he was wrong with Becton and move on - but he drafted a CB and passed on Ickey.

If your team is in a draft position to select a LFT, after the FQB is in place, you take him.

GM malpractice to count on Becton, but there were ways to address the OT position without passing on Sauce.

Armstead, La'El collins, Morgan Moses(!)

Could have leapfrogged Seattle to take the good pass protecting LT instead of being fixated on Garrett Wilson

Being delighted passing on an OT at 4 and still wanting an OT signed/drafted can both happen. No reason to spend the #4 pick on a position of strength, let alone drafting a player in Ickey who was ripped for being a bad pass blocking OT.

We'll have to disagree with the 'position of strength'. Counting on Becton was foolish.

Nobodys "waiting until something bad happened" though...

You cant wait for something bad to happen when it's continually happening.

If they're broke by 40 it's because of bad decisions.  Invested properly and you should never run out.  Hell, if after taxes, you put it all under your mattress, you could spend what, 250K a year for 50 years before you ran out.

The other factor there is the players don't have to spend a lot of money when they are young. Clubs, parties all of that...yes they cost money.

But these guys can get free stuff all day and night long.

I get that he's angry, but engaging the fans like this is not a good look, especially after the so-called "haters" were proven right.

He really ought to run these messages by an agent or PR person before he decides to click "Send" or "Post" or whatever kind of button is used in Twitter land.

your so-called franchise left tackle is struggling in camp, especially with pass protection, is behind last year's 3rd round pick on the depth chart and is playing guard.  obviously it is early in his career, but there were many concerns about his ability to pass protect and questions on whether he would hold up at LT

Becton needs to STFU and just take care of business.  Get healthy, rehab and lose weight.  For all the talking he did this past offseason, look at what happened.  He looks like an idiot.  Yet he's still engaging with fans and still talking smack.

That "Big Bust" T-shirt isn't looking like such a bright idea right now.

Why would he retire and leave guaranteed money on the table?

Rehab is very difficult. Having to go through it back to back years for an injury on the same knee with all the uncertainty of what will happen even if he does do it 100% has to be a difficult thing to get motivated for. Maybe the guaranteed money is enough motivation. Maybe it's not.

I would seriously be questioning whether I was cut out for the NFL and if it was worth it to continue if I were him.

Absolutely, he has guaranteed money still owed. He can sit and get fat all he wants for 2 more years. Jets of course will not pick up his option. 2023 will likely be his last yr as a Jet and possibly in the NFL.

I want Mekhi to search deep within himself and treat this injury as an opportunity to reflect on his professionalism, approach to his career, and level of maturity.

His NFL days may or may not be over ... but his life is still just beginning.

"When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things"

Good words to live by.

Pulling for you Mekhi .. everyday IS an opportunity to get better.

Does it appear that Becton looks like a real NFL athlete under that T-shirt?  Is that all good weight that he is carrying?

The Jets PR team were morons for letting him get up there and speak.  Every time he opens his mouth he puts his foot in it.

He needs to weigh himself everyday.  He basically gets ZERO carbs while he rehabs.  He needs to lose weight during this process.

I’m more than happy to agree that they should’ve done more at OT. Just saying that, yes, I was adamant then and haven’t changed my opinion that the Jets should not’ve used the #4 pick on an OT, and nothing’s happened so far to change my mind on that front. I don’t like to dwell on things that didn’t happen, though, I’d rather focus on what they’re going to do now.

Your evaluation of Becton didn't "change my (your) mind on that front"  - that LT was still a major weakness?

I don't like to just forget  things that did happen and let those responsible walk scott free. But yes we need to move on and sign a serviceable LT and see what this team can do.

Oh, no need to apologize. This is a board where disagreeing is where most conversations start. :)

First, an OT was taken with the 57th pick, Luke Goedeke,

You are 100% correct. Upon reading the bio, Goedeke did play RT, though he projects to play G at the pro level (NFL has him listed him as a G, which is why I missed him).

and then three guys early in the 3rd who fell a bit (69 Petit-Frere, 72 Lucas, and 77 Raimann).  There was a pretty big dropoff in talent after that, depending upon which site you look at, but especially when you look at what actually happened.

No more OT went in the 3rd round after 77.  The next taken was Faalele at 110, some 34 picks later.  That's a huge dropoff in guys actually taken.

Yeah, always tough to determine potential as different sites will differ significantly (hell, professional scouts disagree on potential all the time). I grabbed a screencap of what the NFL has listed on their site for prospect grading (for simplicity's sake; you can agree or disagree in regards to their proficiency). 7 is Pro bowl talent, 6.7 to 6.9 is year 1 starter. 6.2 to 6.6 is basically "will eventually start". I also added a column for Next Gen stats (again from the NFL site). 90+ is considered Elite college production. 70 to 90 is good. I don't remember the rest, but under 70 is average and somewhere below that is poor. If you compare 1st and 3rd rounders, there's an obvious drop off. But when comparing 3rd and 4th, they're pretty close in talent. Drop off again in the 5th.

image.thumb.png.f99190315e1298787f2b8b31432753de.png

I also checked on Goedeke, just to see where he lines up, and he's grading lines up with the other 3rd / 4th round tackles taken for both expected role and college production. At a grading of 6.26 and 76 next gen, he's pretty much inline with Max Mitchell (6.2 and 75) and Faalele (6.28 / 77).

Of course, you never know, but the earlier you get an OT (rounds 1-2 are your best bet), the better the chance to get someone good. That's not so true of OG, you can get real good ones later at a decent rate. Maybe Mitchell will turn out to be better than those earlier guys?

I agree 100% with this statement. The draft is basically an informed lottery. Who was a player that worked well in a system? What talent will translate to the next level? How will he play with team mates / coaches? Who has his career derailed by injury? You do your due diligence and make the calls that you believe will improve your team the most.

JD traded the #69 pick earlier to move up for Jermaine Johnson, so he could have had his pick of those guys who went early 3rd.  Once he did that, he would have had to trade back up to the early 3rd. C'est la vie!

Agreed. Jumping up for JJ did limit his options later on in the draft. We don't know how they valued any of those players, and they felt strongly enough about what JJ brought to the table to forgo more development talent (that's what you're generally getting in the third round). There was no way JD was jumping back up into the third at that point.

But to a certain degree, that's besides the point. Given how all of these guys are graded, it's really hard to see a clear case for "OMG WE NEEDED THIS GUY IN ROUND 2 / 3)" for the moment.

He might not have a knee that allows him to play again.

There's a lot to unpack with this.  The Jets seemed to ignore his discomfort and slapped a brace on him without having a clue what was going on.  We don't even know if a 320 Lb LT can play on that knee if it's repaired correctly through surgery, PT or a combination of both.

This is just the start for Becton.  I wouldn't rush into a rehab program without seeing 2 of the top knee specialists in the country.   I wouldn't trust the Jets to manage it either.  Becton has a long way back if his knee will even allow that.

Your LT doesn't have to be a high 1st round pick but LT is acknowledged as the 2nd most important position when building a team.

Sure, but the Jets now have a LT that was fine last year in protecting the QB - and even better if they bring in Brown who was an all-pro last year.

The Jets OL will be fine - and now we have a potential superstar CB.

Only if you count Becton.

Yes, at that point. 100% expecting him to be ready for the season.

Fant was named LT before camp even started IIRC. Becton was RT / back-up LT. LT was still not a need. Now, if Fant goes down, they will be on OT #5 and 6 in their next practice, which may be unheard of (that would be Fant, Becton, McDermott and Mitchell hurt I believe), but feels par for the course for the Jets.

Like I said a few years ago things will change around here and they will, for the better with JD. He has and continues to work on the guys in the pits were the priority should have been after Nick, Allen, Brick, DaWoo. I think Becton was a mistake and that happens. You don't need a guy that big and tall(injury prone)only so many Ogdens, Paces', Thomas', etc. in the world at LT anyway, seems to me D's are putting smaller quicker guys with less surface area to block to try and go around guys that size and get home to the QB. Wish him well! Next. I like having the shorter OL across the board anyway with the shorter Qb, once they gel it's up to you Kid. I'd like to see 9 wins this year, but not expecting them.

I hope they are considering AVT at RT.  At least get him reps there as an experiment.  Herbig is more than an adequate G

Great idea that is really worth considering.

Obviously you don’t want to stunt AVT’s growth as a player but why couldn’t he be the RT going forward?   That’s the type of thing they need to move on quickly because he needs reps at tackle and we need to have the new guard get up to speed

I know this can potentially derail the season, but I just feel sad for the big guy.

I remember when he was drafted (you can find the vid im sure) they first showed his dad and he was a monster and hugely fat and we all went (you can find the thread) OMG hes so fat, then it panned to Mekhi and we all went phew! Bottom line is that yes, in order to play ever again he needs to lose some mad weight. His genetics may allow it for a short time if he is super disciplined, but its harder for him than the average person. I think his career is over. I hope he can realize this and quickly save his money and pivot to a media career (he seems to have the personality to be able to do it with all the clap backs and t shirt shtick).
