Payton is one of the most brilliant coaching minds in the game and he's 58. If the Jets don't show significant improvement this year I'd be all for moving on to Payton if he's an option. 12

PS17
No brainer if he wants it. But I can’t see them ditching Saleh if the team makes strides this year. Also, is this list based on reality or is it clickbait from Cody Benjamin (who?)

Brilliant idea. "Has been"? He's not a dinosaur. His scheme still works. In 2020 his offense ranked 5th in ppg. In 2019 it ranked 3rd. And meanwhile, of the top 40 offensive seasons in NFL history (by yardage), Payton's teams have produced SEVEN from the list, including the # 1 overall (2011). Credit all of that to Brees if you wish but even last year, a QB committee of Winston (7 games), Taysom Hill (5), Trevor Siemian (4) and Ian Book (1) combined for 3,186 yards and 29 TDs/13 INTs. Not great but not terrible either considering the lack of quality under center. If Payton came available, you make the move immediately and without regret. And I'd give up a 1st round pick for the privilege, if necessary. 6
Rhg1084
This what the article says: Few teams poured as many resources into supporting their young quarterback this offseason as the Jets, but if Robert Saleh doesn't oversee significant improvement either on the retooled offense or his signature defense, it's possible management could turn to a proven name for a quicker fix. And Payton, besides offering the QB tutelage that could elevate (or seek to replace) Zach Wilson, knows the New Jersey area well, spending six years between the Eagles and Giants from 1997-2002. In the Jets, he'd get a big market, a young roster that should be on the rise, and a division that may have just one big threat in the Bills.

I’m not advocating for Saleh over Payton (as of today) but the notion that Saleh doesn’t understand offense couldn’t be further from the truth. The offensive staff he put in place, even after we lost Knapp, is the most promising offensive staff we have had in over a decade, maybe even 2 decades, especially from a league reputation standpoint. 12 1

Sammybighead
Here's what I know about Payton. Seemingly good coach, has a good track record, bailed on his organization when he saw the writing on the wall, looking to jump on the next up and coming band wagon. Not saying I'd pass, but Saleh deserves a legit opportunity as he took the lumps last year like a man.

But it's really hard to promote culture change and individuals committing to the organization when the organization won't commit to individuals. I think it would spit in the face of culture change for the organization to give up before a real opportunity has been offered. 2

rex-n-effect
This just seems like rumor milling to cover the summer until preseason coverage gears up. There's no rhyme or reason why these teams would be on his list. Several of those teams have new or fairly new coaches. Sorry for Saleh dislikers, but he's almost certainly getting enough latitude to see the roster rebuild and take a stab at a season with a solid roster. I would assume with Miami's big offer this summer and Payton's resume he's going to want to go somewhere that will give him a lot of authority. Tampa Bay might be attractive but they would have to completely wash out Arias and his staff. No way Payton is going to want another head coach watching over his shoulder.
