Purgatory would be keeping Sam and hoping somehow he turns it around.

The move is to start over and yes, if Wilson isn't the guy you try again until you find one.  But the reality is the Jets are in a better position now than they were a few hours ago.

You can lament the past for sure - but also have to face facts and do what's best moving forward.

Exactly.  As fans we are in year 10 of the rebuild.  To saleh it’s week 10 of year 1.   He doesn’t care how bad we’ve been he’s laying the foundation to be good for a long time and building a program.

Who is celebrating?

The Jets have a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator, and very soon a new rookie quarterback.  The Jets also have 7 picks in the first two rounds over the next two drafts.  The Jets have proven nothing about their future, but there is nothing wrong with being hopeful as a fan of the team.

Fans make predictions and get emotionally attached to them.  There was a significant percentage of fans that were ready to move on from Darnold and draft a rookie quarterback at #2.  It's human nature to feel vindicated when things play out the way you saw them.  It does not mean the team is or will be successful as a result of the move.

Yup.  

He set himself up really nicely - about as good as I've seen a team set up to rebuild.

What do people see in Sam that I’m not seeing? He had potential and showed flashes. But not enough to warrant keeping him over drafting a new QB. If we were picking say 13th/14th i would understand the logic of keeping him another year.

• ATL could trade down or go QB
• CIN could go OT or WR over Pitts 
• MIA could go WR over TE (Gesicki)
• DET could go WR over TE (Hockenson) or trade down

Fortunately, this time around from a fan perspective, I haven’t seen anyone saying Wilson or Fields will be saviors. People obviously wanted to move on from Sam because he is a bottom tier QB, but I think fans realize unless we build around the new QB, he will fail and we will keep the cycle of mediocrity repeating. Not that fan opinions matter at all anyway on the outcome of the team. Lets hope JD invests these picks into the OL and weapons.

What a day to be a jet fan.  Joe D still fleecing teams for draft picks and dumping trash players.  Tons of draft picks over the next 2 years to build the team he envisions.  Have the best up and coming coach that every team wanted.  Have a talented qb coming in that every qb needy team wants.

What a time to be a Jet fan!  Celebrate fellas.  This is the beginning of a Super bowl that is coming our way!

Nope.  In the past this franchise has stuck with stinkers who showed they couldn’t play qb - post surgery chad, Sanchez, etc...    it’s not easy to move on but they watched the tape and made the decision that Sam wasn’t the guy.   Better now than 3 years from now.

so this means that no one here can cheer on ANY move the team makes this off-season.  we need to all take a wait and see attitude, if not the woe-is-us one you seem to prefer?

everyone here wants to see the team win.  the hope is these moves set the team up for future wins.  will it work?  no one knows, including you.  but that doesn't mean people aren't allowed to express optimism that maybe this FO is setting this team in a direction for future success.

the alternatives were run it back with sam (and if so, decide whether to pick up the 5th year option before he plays another snap) or move on in a new direction.  what would you have done?

Well anyone that still thinks he can be good and I am one of them simply says that the team added zero talent for him since day one and he was saddled with the sorriest excuse for a coach the last two years.

We will know soon next year if he is an underachieving bad Qb or if he was put in the worst position possible.

I haven’t been a fan of Douglas but he’s right to move on from Sam and get his own guy. His fate will be tied to Wilson now which is the way it should be.

I'm great with moving on from Darnold, he's terrible. At this point I'm just hoping the bring in a bridge QB and not just go right to Zachapono.
