Todd Bowles - DC extraordinaire

Last night the Buccaneers got a 20-14 road win over the Panthers, during which the Tampa Bay defense held Christian McCaffery to 53 total yards from scrimmage, 1 week removed from McCaffrey putting up 209 yards from scrimmage against the Rams.  The TB front 7 was aggressive all night against Norv Turner's Panther offense, with Bowles clearly getting the better of him.

Discuss.

Cam Newton missed wide open WRs all night.

With that said, I think Bowles is a solid DC. You can be a good DC and be totally unqualified to be a head coach (see the mistake at the end of the game that almost gave the Panthers a free first down).

Bowles wasn't the DC here, his pal Kacey Rodgers was, not sure what we are going for here.....

It’s obvious what people are going for around here lately. Anything that makes the Jets look bad, anything that makes it seem as if teams are benefiting from Jets decisions or bad fortune. All of that is fair game and gets a full thread.

The claims that Bowles was a bad DC were only ever bitterness from (understandably) fed up fans.  He absolutely was a terrible HC and clearly not fit for the position, but he's far from the first one who can still succeed as a coordinator both before and after having shown that.  We even get a momentary glimpse of that here, when the Jets D immediately performed significantly better when he took over play-calling short term.

Don't get me wrong, he's certainly not some unbelievably great savant at it all, but he's still good enough for the job.

Bowles has always been a good dc.  That has no bearing on how you are as a hc.

So here comes idiot jet fan posts about how todd bowles sucks.

He's the Ken Whisenhunt of Defensive Coordinators... Bowels good DC, awful HC

Lame attempt at drama.

Extraordinaire:  outstanding or remarkable in a particular capacity.

What about Todd Bowles defense is outstanding or remarkable??

Nobody questioned his ability to be a DC, he is fine, what anyone with half a brain questioned was his ability to be a HC. His staff's were awful, he is not HC material. Doesn't have anything to do with his ability to be a DC, which is fine, but not in anyway extraordinaire.

Todd Bowles is not our coach anymore.  Nothing he does, positive or negative, has any impact on the Jets unless he is playing us or a team we are competing with for a playoff spot.

Was different when Rex left and went to a Divsiion rival. I really don't care if he is or is not successful in Tampa.  His defense played well last night.  So be it.

Bowles as DC > Bowles as HC

Some people still don’t understand this.

Have you ever seen Wayne Gretzky play hockey? Ever seen him coach?

Some guys are well-suited for one thing and just really not good at something else even if it seems closely related.

The Jets have taken two excellent defensive coordinators in Rex Ryan and Todd Bowles who they unfortunately hired to be head coaches.

Excellent post WITHOUT having to call others "idiots".

Gase is the opposite of Bowles, in that he is an offensive guru that owns the offense as HC, similar to Doug Pederson.

There are other HCs who hire capable people to run both offense and defense.  that is harder to do because those people are scarce, and you have to pay them. Gase pays the Hobbit to help.

Bowles failure was delegating his defense to Kacy.  Similarly, Mac delegated the scouting to Barzigan and others.  In both cases, the results were disasterous.

I think the only team that gives Bowles a second chance to HC is TB when Arians retires again.  I think that is the plan.  I think Bowles is a personal project for Arians.

I thought Bowles was a good leader and a solid guy. But he’s a former DB and his secondary regularly got torched. I can’t see blaming all of it on the DC Bowles was in charge and the D reflected him. He had 4 years his specialty is defense and they sucked. So his firing was deserved. The season opener for the Bucs a home game they lost 31-17 although mostly because Jameis threw 3 picks.

What exactly is the purpose of this thread ?  BTW : Errr didn't Todd's D just give up 31 last week against the 49ers or am I mistaken ?

after seeing the long line of failed mac draft picks it makes you wonder why bowles just didn't quit instead of take it.   imo bowles gets far too much blame for the jets record.  he made some some mistakes with discipline and he was more of a players coach than the jets needed.

^^^^ This was the purpose of the thread, for those wondering.  Bowles' most egregious mistake was hiring, and keeping on, Kacy Rodgers as the DC.  Otherwise he deserves much more of a pass than he gets around here.

Bowles found a DC job in 5 minutes.  Macc.....still unemployed.
