Why I've been worse.... My Amazing Father Died of Cancer

Recommended Posts

So sorry to hear this. My mom died of cancer and my dad of Parkinson’s a number of years ago and it was back to back. It was tough to see them suffer.  Life is hardest when we lose those closet to us. But I’m sure they were proud of raising the family they did and having a wacko son like me turn out somewhat sane after all the insanity. You’re a good son to be there and he looks proud to be your dad. Peace.

Dad's Funeral service was this past Saturday. Filled St. Anns Downtown WPB, and then took over O'Sheas for about 4 hours.  It was amazing and cathartic.  I did Dad's Eulogy and got a bunch of laughs, mostly from the "off the cuff" stuff. It was exactly the type of traditional service he loved, but with a sense of humor as well. Bagpipes, Full honor Guard, Rifle Volley and Flag Detail... guys in class A Uniforms, Police, Fire, and a couple of guys in their Army Dress Blues...it was badass. I will miss him until I see him again, but man, we gave him a hell of a send off.

Why does my not-yet 14 year old look like he just finished work on Wall St. And is stopping for Happy Hour before the train...?

Eulogy, finished with unscripted, "OK, and finally, this may be the first and only time I ever say this, and I'm sorry if anyone gets offended, but 'Go Navy, Beat Army!"

Me and a few of my 56 cousins. Most were there, down from NY and points all over.

Thanks for all the support,  everyone. It's been a rough few months.

Like every good Irish funeral (Dolan?), ended up in a bar.

May the road rise to greet him,and you know the rest....

Thank you everyone for the words and thoughts. My Dad passed peacefully in his sleep yesterday morning.  I will miss him for the rest of my days, and never stop telling "Grandpa" stories to my boys.... I'm gonna miss him so bad.

I’m sorry JE. From direct experience, it will get better with time. May your father Rest In Peace and may you enjoy him and his memory for the rest of your days.

Anyone who has lost a father knows what you are going through. My prayers go out to you. My dad died from Leukemia. I was only 17 when he died, so not much time to really get to know him. Most teenagers don't have much time for parents. Not many of us have the mental capacity to understand what the world has in store when we're that young. I miss him every day as I know you will miss yours.

My dad is dying of cancer, I recently enrolled him in Hospice (at home) and am taking a month off from work. To be here....

He was diagnosed 8 years ago and fought like the tough as nails man he is.

Eventually, The Enemy get us all....

Hes the best man I have ever known, and I am not only proud that he's my Dad, even at 51, I just want to be half the man he is. My Brother and I asked him how he wanted his funeral and when he wanted last rites, and He said, "Yeah, sure I'd love to see a Priest and take communion, but I don't really have anything to confess too", and I started laughing.....Told him  "Dad, you are not only definitely the best man in THIS room, but you're the best man I've ever known!". Fact.

Anyway, our FD award ceremony was tonight,  and while I was awarded a bunch of stuff (Including Officer of the Year), the best part was talking to him afterwards

This is gonna suck,  and I'm just trying.

Tonight,  11/4.

love ya, Dad 19438.thumb.jpeg.2e12a8afc5ec66a00f2d6f02876fa73d.jpeg

I feel your pain. I lost my Dad to cancer over 2 yrs ago. The holidays are tough without your parents no matter how old you are. Prayers and be well.

I know it hurts like the dickens now. But it gets better. I too lost my father to cancer when he too was 79 (23 years ago). But not long after his death, all I could think about was how proud and lucky I was to be his son. The more time passes the more I brag about him and the more I have him in my ear giving me better advice from afar than any other person gives me close-up. I'm sure you'll have the same experience, And as to the justifiable bragging, I see that it's already begun.
