Why did Todd Bowles fail?

Recommended Posts

His teams were routinely unprepared and seemed to quit on him when things went sideways.

He also lacked situational football acumen.   The typical Bowles era loss would usually include a head scratching decision like punting from midfield on 4th and 8 with 6 minutes left down 2 scores.

The one that really stands out was a game on a Thursday night in Buffalo. Jets up 6 late in the game score a TD. Now up 12 he chooses to kick the PAT. Jets up 13. Buffalo scores immediately to cut lead to 6. Recover onside and were in position to win the game. Jets held on but not going for 2 at the point was inexcusable/fire able on the spot. Good coaches make mistakes but not the kind of dumb ones Bowles made a habit of committing.

Great resume as an assistant, former player, former team captain.

I think he gets another shot next year, but what mistakes did he make with the Jets that he needs to correct in his next opportunity?

Was it all lack of talent?

he wanted more money and wanted a new contract

For fear of being replaced by his assistants, he hired less qualified associates around him or not very good coaches. Sad thing is he was a horrible communicator and x and os coach. Not much of a motivator either. That created a trickle down effect of suck.

Cause he sucks.

Doesn’t understand how to manage an offense.

No clear plan on developing young players.

Not enough discipline for veterans.

Meek-mild play not to lose mentality resulting in handoffs on 3rd & 7 and punting on 4th & 1 on their 45 in the 4th quarter when you’re down 2 scores.

Not specific player type to formulate a draft and free agency strategy plan.

No idea how to build a solid coaching staff outside of a secondary and WR coach.

Poor game planner without a clue that halftime adjustments are actually allowed in the NFL rule book without penalty.

Touchdowns produce more points that field goals and punts.

Sometimes the simplest answer is best:  He just was not a good HC, especially on game days.  The team often looked unprepared and he was awful at adapting his game plan in response to what the other team was doing.  Just kept doing what he thought would work even as it was clear that it wouldn't.

He did a poor job hiring assistants along with bad talent. He needed much better offensive and defensive coordinators.  His special teams coordinator was good.

Defense was fine under him.   Offense was and still is our problem.  Minimal and declining talent of the offense and terrible drafting to re-load the offense was a huge problem.  But with that said I do think his OC and DC were problems after the lack of talent.

1) Todd Bowles had nothing to work with. Mike Macagnan is quite possibly the worst talent evaluator the Jets have ever had and that's saying something. You have to have talent to win and Mac screwed him at every turn.

2) Loyalty to Kace Rogers. The Jets were always known for defense when Bowles became HC. On his watch and under Kace Rogers, the Jets defense had plummeted out of top 10 ranks to mid 20's. It was an abomination for a team that takes pride in good defense. It was also Bowles supposed pedigree? Defense is why he got the Jets job. He couldn't even hold up his supposed expertise.

3) He was an X's and O's DINGBAT. Rex Ryan was a master of X's and O's against the very best in the league. Bowles didn't have the first clue. Many times he had a decent game plan going in. Only to be stuck in quick sand after the opponents made strategic adjustments. He had NO technical know how.

4) Failure to ever get the offense going. The offense was terrible when he arrived and he did NOTHING to ever raise their play.

Those are all of the reasons I can think of right now. I'm sure there were others.

Lack of discipline. Players got away with a lot and did not suffer the consequences (Mo W missing his own birthday party by blowing off practice?)

When there two sets of standards for employees, it corrodes morale big time - which would explain the lethargic effort more often than not for his teams.

Seriously? Bad HC.

Not everyone is a leader. Some are just SMEs... project managers, etc... there's lots of coordinators who can't make the leap... and conversely, there's some who were never all that as a coordinator, but able to lead teams quite competently.

With a veteran team in 2015, he was okay.  For 15 weeks.

But is there one young player, on either side of the ball, that developed signfiicantly under Coach Bowles.  Guys who came in as competent players in '15 & '16 were still the same competent players in 2018, but they never improved signficantly.  Jordan Jenkins, Leonard Williams, Robby Anderson, Brandon Shell, Darron Lee (ok using the word competent very loosely to include Lee).  All the same player in year 3 or 4 with Bowles as they were in year 1.  He did not have much to work with thanks to Macc, but its not like he had much success developing some of the competent players that Macc did stumble across.

Bowles and Gase are the same.  Neither would legitimately be in the NFL if not for cronyism.

They both are putrid.

I'm not quite there on Gase yet, but it certainly could turn out to be true.

It wouldn't be surprising to anyone if Rex Ryan, Bowles and Gase all turned out to be better fits as Coordinators than Head Coaches.  It's not a total knock on them, that's just how it goes sometimes.  Lots of guys from Wade Phillips to Norv Turner to maybe even Gregg Williams are simply meant to be coordinators rather than Head Coaches.

I just said something similar about guys who are better as coordinators than HC's but your point on Head Coaches is absolutely true as well.  Do you think Bill Parcells fits that category?  Great leader of men, great manager of a team, great motivator and decision-maker....but not too many people will put him on a Top 10 list of guys who could scheme up a great defense or that you'd really want as just a coordinator.

Just now, Biggs said:

His first job as HC was with a terrible organization.  He didn't have the chops to get Mac fired.

That's probably the one thing that Gase has immediately done well.  Gase was hired, he got here and after just a couple months with Maccagnan he had to think to himself, "I'm not going to sit here and let this guy do to me what he did to Bowles."

- Bad roster

- GM who didn't properly value "premium positions"

- With the GM doing a poor job of roster construction he didn't
"raise his voice" to ownership (remember they were on the same level)

- Below average QB

- Too much turnover at the OC spot

- Even though he was supposed to be a disciplinarian he wasn't.  On
the field (too many penalties) and off (Wilkerson, Richardson, JawGate)

- He turned over the defense (his biggest strength) to a poor DC

- Poor game management

the real problem with bowles is he came to an organization with a first time gm and the management structure didn't let either have any say over the other.  it just didn't work.  it almost worked in 2015 when fitzy had a career year but then the injury bug hit in 2016 and they were toast.  and then mac put all of his creds into drafting hack thereby giving himself the excuse to not draft mahomes or watson.  it would be really interesting to hear bowles talk about the talent level of the players mac brought in.  it seems like quite a few didn't live up to their draft positions.  finally bowles was more of a player's coach than the jets needed.  rex was a buffoon coach and ran a circus.  bowles may not have run a circus but he let the vets get away with way too much.
